The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

Good lord! I’m all caught up.

Let the days mayhem commence. We are almost out of bigger quality hardwood that I sell at our woodstand, so today I’m gonna buck (round) a bunch of dead ash trees, load em on my trailer and bring em down to the farm buildings to be split.

It’s gonna be much warmer.

I have five cords of silver maple which isn’t as good firewood as oak, ash, other types of maple.

A few people told me no one would know the difference, I could just sell silver maple since I have so much of it at the same price.

But I would know. And I won’t sell an inferior product.

And I need to split a bunch of kindling, since we’re almost out of that too.

True - everyone says the military is so soft now. But frostbite and injuries resulting from that are no joke!

Safety first.
I later found out we were used as test subjects for a medical study. I forget the details but we were never told. I will say that Lowry was one of the best times of my life. We would march back to the baracks, go in one end of the barracks, change and walk out the other end and there or girl friends would pick us up! Uhm Uhm Uhm I did find out that one girl i was dating was 14!!!! I was introduced to her by the girl friend of a buddy. I had just turned 18.

Right..... I feel the same. It is amazing how people will deliberately screw people over because " they won't know" what an asshole.

Would the silver maple work better as kindling? Maybe that is an option? I know different woods burn differently...

I tend to use oak (which splits beautifully) for kindling, or ash scraps from splitting. Also, I have a lot of black locust which is super high quality firewood and is nice and “stringy”. Makes excellent kindling.

TBH i have never used the silver maple for kindling, so I’m not even sure - but I will try it today!!

I didn't find out until decades later. We had a reunion and my buddy told me and had found out from his GF who he had stayed in touch with. Girls mature more quickly but damn.

Being real dry is the key. I took a course a survival course as a boy scout and the key was dry to start a fire. We could start a fire with flint and stone. They showed us to take dead branches off the trees and not pick up wood from the ground. Wood on the ground would be damp at best. The stuff hanging in the tree would be mostly dry. We could start a fire when it was raining.

Good luck, M! As much as corporations and companies complain that "noBodY wAnTs tO woRk aNymoRe," they surely don't make it easy for those who do. Good for you pursuing those certifications!

BTW - What story were you reading?
Anything by M_storyman_x is good imo but specifically High School Dates (misleading title as are much of his) is the story of high school sweethearts and their trials through life as adults, lovers, and soulmates. If your interested, Eves_Garden writes and performs several audio novels (truck driving days) that are just splendid. Currently waiting on the last 3 chapters of Noah and Kate to drop.

Dementia is a horrible disease, so my heart goes out to you. My dad had it for a few years and I think my mum may be starting to show signs of it.

With my dad, it was more that he went back about 50 years, so the house he was in wasn't his house so every evening he'd try and pack his stuff up so he could go "home". Also he thought his siblings and friends were still alive etc. I ended up having to move back in with my mum to help her look after him as she didn't want to put him in a nursing home.

If each of your mom's episodes is "new" to her (i.e. she doesn't remember the past ones) it may be worth a different tack - tell her you've allowed your daughters to go out and talk to people outside, they're allowed in, if they're noisy you'll go have a word. That may placate your mom and settle her down. With my dad, when he started saying he wanted to go "home", me and my mum would say things like "not yet, we'll have a cup of tea first" or "we'll stay at Jay's tonight and go tomorrow" and he'd be Ok for a bit after that.

Failing that, a bit of gallows humour and talking to someone does help. Know I've never met you before but feel free to drop me a PM if you want or need to. 😊
Omg, thank you Jay. I was struggling with this and everything I came up with would have just fed into it or some emotional damage to someone. I love that idea. I can't see a downside if she doesn't refuse it outright.

I think this year we should all get together in person. Serious!

At least for the US… you and RJ are probably the most central!

Im not sayin, I’m Just sayin!
Maybe make it a region thing. East coast meet, West Coast meet, and hillbilly meet. That might help those who couldn't make a long journey to participate.
But I would try to make it. Bring those pets if you can. They are almost as much a part of this thread as anyone.

Let me know how it works..... we may be on to something.....

Funny thing is... I can't start a fire with a Firestarter.... and yes I have tried....hahahahahaha

Assuming you freeze what you don’t eat?? We usually have enough frozen blueberries to last us throughout the year. (We do eat a lot - in our breakfast most mornings)
Yeah, we fill the freezer. I have planted nearly three dozen fruit trees in the last decade. We're just starting to see some of that fruit. The blackberries are wild, although the tame patch is starting now too. Raspberries are tame. Started a new garden plot last summer for this year. Will probably need another freezer soon!

Me too. We picked almost 10 gallons this year. Only cleaned up 1/4 of what was there. Did 8 gallons by myself the year before.

I have them in smoothies for breakfast (along with apples, carrots, celery, broccoli, etc...). Apples and berries give enough flavor the veggies sort of disappear. It tastes sweeter than it really is. (But don't tell my taste buds that!)
I love blackberries

I’ll third the blackberry love. Have to be careful in these parts, as the black snakes like those thickets also! 😲.

When we lived in Germany, the Germans would let you walk through their fields, or at least the borders, which were these huge hedgerows, usually blackberry thickets. Like some were 8’ tall and so thick you couldn’t penetrate more than a foot or two into them. The village we lived in would all come out and pick a bucket. When our first son was born, I had him in one of those chest snuggly things. I was leaning in to grab a nice fat berry when he started crying…you guessed it, blackberry cane thorn scratch. SWhoMBO, was NOT happy. 🙄

Snow is melting away. Got out for some Pho last night and the temps are starting to edge north of freezing during th day. Night time it’s still hovering in the high 20’s. Everyone have a nice weekend. Your MZ:

You’ll get a kick out of this Wonderer…

When I was in WOC school, it was July or Aug in Ft Rucker. Well into the upper 90’s. I was given detention for some minor infraction that the Drill was confused about 😁, and we were tasked to make big rocks into small rocks.

Well, the wet bulb said “Heat Stress” or whatever it flagged as being too hot to work outside. Except, that Saturday morning the rest of the class was “Volunteering” to do clean up. So while the “volunteers” were out in the heat, the F-up’s were sitting in the AC watching them and laughing our asses off!

Go Army!

Great story!! at some point I will have to reiterate the story about Lieutenant C…

I heard about that storm. It was in my news feed. Lots of damage in Ireland and Scotland.

Hey, @Greylag! Pop in and let us know you're OK! 🫂😘🥰
I so love you guys…..yes we were battered yesterday as our house is on the side of a hill facing west. We look out down the estuary and out to sea on the west coast and a little south of the worst hit area!. I am pleased to say there is no damage just a few branches down. Lots of general damage but we survived unscathed! Farm buildings in particular, lost roofs etc.
