Kaiju Academy, he was finally here. After all the talk about signing up to get tested, all the hour he put into Hunter construction, he finally grew the balls to sign up and get shipped out. Jake Trent, stepped off the bus into the Kansas sunlight with a squint. Here was hoping he could make some good out of himself.
Of course that only worked if he had bonding potential with one of the female cadets. That was how piloting a Hunter worked. Only a bonded, mated pair could work their minds together to control two sides of the giant robot equally. If the pilots were mismatched, then it fell apart and the mental strain either crippled or killed both pilots.
Dangerous work.
But it was mankind's only hope if they ever had a chance to stop the Kaiju attacks. Kaiju, the giant beasts that rose from the ocean like mammoth harbringers of destruction. In order to fight them back, we built giant humanoid machines called Hunters to fight the giants on their own level. Piloting took two people in perfect sync, over time we learned that a perfect sync could only be achievement by lovers who had a previous spark together.
Thus the first day of testing at Kaiju Academy. If people didn't have bond potential then it was a waste to try to train them, because no one was good enough to pilot a Hunter solo. However because women with great potential were much harder to come by, the military teachers at K.A. gave greater chance for a woman to find a bonding mate.
One such woman was already on the field awaiting a new set of gentlemen to make their attempts at sparking with her. She had gone longer than anyone ever had before her without a spark with a man. Most people wondered why she was still allowed to be enrolled, still be trained, when it was becoming obvious she was a waste of space. No one how good she tested, how powerful and skilled she seemed behind a simulated Hunter, if she couldn't bond with anyone she would never make it into the cockpit of a real Hunter taking down a real Kaiju.
Jake was lead with the other gentlemen from his bus, about twenty guys all together, to a field where seven girls were already lined up in full uniform. The military officer paced between the men and women as they faced each other at a lose form of attention.
"Gentlemen we thank you for volunteering today. With luck at least seven of you will spark with these women before you. With more luck one pair of you will go on to becoming Hunter pilots. God knows we can use you." The officer spun toward the ladies. "Ladies just like before you will examine each of these men to see if you get a spark from them. I know what we ask of you is hard, to force yourself to bond and mate with someone you have never even met and might not ever even like, it is a hard burden to bare. But I remind you all that without that bond, that mating, all of humanity will die. The last Kaiju attack hit Japan with a casualty estimate of 1.8 million. Next time it could be your hometown, your families."
He paused and turned to the men. "Gentlemen this is hard on you as well. Sparking your mind and body with someone can hurt. Make this as easy as possible, do not touch, speak, or even wink at the ladies trying to spark with you. If a spark happens we will know and will can proceed to the next step."
He made a motion with his hands and the ladies moved forward.
HE knew that six of the girls had a good chance of sparking. But the last one....this might be her last chance. Top of her class in every single area, determined, beautiful, strong, perfect in every way they could hope for....except she couldn't spark with anyone.
Last chance.
The girl behind the star of the class muttered, "Why are you even still trying. You can't spark with anyone bitch, about time you fucking quit and went home."
Jake stood at the end of the line and waited for a girl to try to spark with him. His left hand was starting to hurt really bad. Ever since that spark hammer exploded in his hand he had lost most function of his left hand, and the nerve damage almost constantly gave him pain. Luckily piloting a Hunter required his mind, not his hands. Still the sooner this was over, the sooner he could stick his hand in a bucket of ice.
