The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

Weird timing for my weird mind post.

I needed something to just barely knock the high gloss glare off of something that was causing a reflection like a mirror. Looking around the house, I found various plastic bags and things that I could snip a small section out of. For no special reason, I remember a type of cellophane tape I hadn't seen in months Most are high gloss, but this type has just the slightest 'non-glare' surface without impairing the level of see-though. Seems to have done the job quite well.

As I'm clicking in here to post, I see the gauzy picture discussion.

It never stopped. Whoever is doing it doesn't want any story to be higher than 4.85 and whenever it does, it gets hammered until it's not.
I reported my story to Laurel with a note about the voting. It's an eight-year-old story, but it's had six new votes in the last three days and the score dropped by 0.02. That's hard to do when a story has 1332 votes.

I don't think I'd bother, but the last time I saw voting like this it was happening all over the top list, and the site worked for months to fix it.

It must be kizmet.

You might have been able to smear it with vaseline, but then you'd have to clean it off.

The readers don't notice a lot, or at least don't comment on it. I left an editing mark (square brackets around a comment) in the middle of my last story and there's been not a peep.
Two of 14 comments on my first story are about how "conscient" isn't a word (which it is), so I think that depends on the reader.

It's hard to predict what readers will comment on. The spread in comments on Watch Me! is like

God, that was boooooooring.

I survived like three first pages but come on! This thing is ten times longer than needed.

Incredible writing -- I almost forgot to breathe. The story pulled me in, and the characters took hold of my heart. Superbly crafted.

Then there were the spelling corrections and shots at literary critique.

The rabbit holes we fall into ....

"As no one from Custer's command survived, there is no record of his "last stand" and the famous image of him with long, blonde hair and a broad-brimmed hat, wearing his buckskin jacket, guns blazing, is a later fabrication encouraged by his wife, Elizabeth Bacon Custer (l. 1842-1933), who established his legacy as a great American hero through her books and speaking tours. Custer had shaved his head before the battle, the buckskin was too warm to wear in Montana territory in June, and no one knows what weapons he had in hand when killed. His body was found on 27 June when Terry and Gibbon arrived. He had been stripped naked and had a gunshot wound to his left chest and another to his left temple."

No such luck. Waiting for triage but they said it shouldn't be too long. I guess that means they dont think Im immediately in danger though.

Ugh, I hope no IVs.

Hugs and good luck.
I will stop hogging the thread after this.

Being admitted now becauze my heart rate keeps spiking (125+ while lying down) and they cant figure out why I have a fever. CT scan was clear, at least, so Im not bleeding, im not blocked. Just fever and body aches.

I think it's good for more people to read accurate accounts of the Indian Wars. Personally, I was born on land stolen from the Sioux. I spent time growing up in western South Dakota, and I've read all I can read about it. In today's context, the truth is nauseating.

We want to keep hearing updates. 🫂

Keep us updated.
Well then - last one for the night. Got delayed in the ER for a bit because I "need" a private room. God forbid a cis person has to sleep in the same room as me. But they finally found me a bed, they are bringing me Tylenol, and then FINALLY I can sleep.
I dont even know how many different antibiotics ive been given.

For all you who have temps in the 30's, I have the same. Except in Celsius...

We got to the motel and it was 37. The dog was grizzly, which was expected as he's been lying in the back seat with a stretch every couple of hours. I jumped in the shower, and he barged in as well.

A cool shower for both, and he's now happy.

Golden retrievers and hot weather don't mix...

I got 400 words this morning. This is my third attempt to write this opening scene, and the second story of its type that has gotten multiple rewrites of the opening. The tone has not been working for me so I've been scrapping what I've done before and starting over. This is the sixth draft

It's worth taking the time to experiment with this, though, as whatever tense, POV, and word corpus I ultimately go with will probably continue through several stories for a lot of next year's writing for me.

It looks like we're going to get some snow Thursday night into Friday morning. Oh, Joy. The doctor has doubled my blood pressure medicine because taking me off the Meloxicam hasn't lowered it enough. Now I'll probable get orthostatic hypotension so I'll have to be careful standing up until my body adjusts to it. Oh, Joy, again.

Any way, there's a fresh pot of coffee brewing and the teapot is hot. There are donuts and cookies on the counter and someone refilled the candy bowl, so help yourself. There's a whole bunch of new gifts under the tree and I see a weird-shaped gift for @TheRedLantern next to the tree. @NotWise has a couple of gifts under the tree and I see one for me there too.

I'll be over in the corner working on my new story. Isn't it weird that as soon as I start on a new story, ideas for other stories keep popping into my head. And here I thought I'd run out of ideas for stories ...

The weather here should be dry and balmy for being so close to the solstice. This is bad for next year's water supply.

The broccolini continues to produce. There's enough out there so I can use it fresh-cut in the teriyaki beef that I'm planning for dinner tomorrow. It may never get cold enough to kill the plants. I'll cut them down next month so I can restart the gardens.

My Christmas story for next year is proceeding at a few hundred words/day. I reread what I've written recently. The pace is good. The dialog is at least okay. The story and the characters are developing.

You and the dog are going to need to spend time splashing in the Indian Ocean.
