Both are good, but my preference is for Kirk.

Kirk was reckless (always leading away-teams and that shouldn't be allowed) and operated on "Hunches", "Gut-feelings" and instinct and I can't remember an episode where those didn't save the day (all the redshirts lost on his command, might say otherwise).

Picard was thoughtful and more methodic and that led to a slower paced show, whereas Kirk's nonsense always moved the plot forward at breakneck speed.
