The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

Early this morning (3:30 AM), I finished my first draft of what is supposed to be my Valentine's Day contest entry. I sent said manuscript to my editor/publisher, to edit it 'for the contest.' To which he replied, "Not going to happen, I may get edited, and you may get a rewrite done in time. But then to re-edit it for a contest that's already begun, when it needs to go on Kindle Select, just won't happen. So either you do the second draft and enter it as is, or put this up for sale, your choice. But our goal (yours and mine) is to make money."

Of course, he's right. I told him to start the edit, and we can shoot for a Feb 1st - 14th publication date.

Always next year.

Working on putting some 750-word stories (from the past) into a collection of short-short stories. I have a few that've never been released to up with it. I need a cup of inspiration now.

I have no need for a HooeyID. I don't go any where I might even maybe need one.

Renewed my DO last time for 8 years. Expires in 203X something. I'm not sure I'll be alive to renew it again.

Got a backlighted keyboard just about a year ago.

Why are the O, H, N, L keys and spacebar showing so much more wear than the T, E, A, D and most others?

Just got me thinking. I caught it because I heard it. Very faint sound of water running in what should have been a quiet room.

I've caught leaks before by hearing the dripping enough to let me track it down. Each case COULD have gotten expensive over time.

How would a deaf person know if water was running or dripping somewhere like that?
Well, if your eardrums are healthy (as mine are) then you can sorta feel the vibrations of the sound it makes. With enough practice you can guess that that vibration is water dripping. Other than that, water has a certain well, scent is the wrong word, but actively dripping or flowing water can be felt with the nose in a similar way to smelling things.

Still, it's much better to have someone on hand who can actually hear the water.
Any of you folks as old as me can remember manually tuning the radio in the car and you can barely make out the station and then you somehow recognize the song and it suddenly sounds like it's coming in clearly because your brain is filling in the missing information.
That's kinda how all hearing for me goes these days, ever since it became too painful to wear hearing aids. It's why the more familiar with someones voice I become, the better I can 'hear' them.

Try that with a conversation on the radio - chatting with a station that's in a different state or on a different continent. With a song your brain will fill in the notes you remember, with a conversation your brain will help a little bit. That other station they're just barely coming in above the static and you're trying to get their call sign. You know it starts with K or W... sometimes N, occasionally an A and your brain will help there, now what's the next letter? Or is it a number?

To a HAM radio enthusiasts that's called "Lip reading the radio."

when I last renewed my driver's license (7 years ago), at that time the State of Texas was requiring a birth certificate or passport (has a gold star on the front of the license). I had a valid passport and used that; bbbbuuuuttttt I no longer travel by plane and only rather short distances by vehicle. The Real ID will be proof of citizenship. I also must present it when voting. Last year when it was time to renew the driver's license I switched to "ID" since I no longer drive (sadly, due to vision issues) and my family basically told me they longer were willing to have me drive. Not certain I will still be breathing when the passport no longer is valid (2030).

Couldn't sleep and wondering if I am writing for the right reasons. My latest story has gotten two comments that are making me reconsider if I should even try any more.

Oh, well, as long as I am up, I will start some coffee and heat up the teapot. There are some snacks on the counter.

I will be over in the corner looking at the screen and trying to put some words together ...

Well, without judging it myself, it has earned a pretty solid 4.6 overall. I think you can ignore the 2.0 from the East German judge.*

In any case, let's not go all Lake Wobegon here. Even Michelangelo had his off days.

*Dating myself again. I wonder how many here will know of what I speak.

OMG I did today's Wordle in two tries! My weird starting word finally paid off :D

I can only dream! Maybe not. According to the stats, I've recorded three instances of solving on the second try. My first word is loaded with the most common characters in English words, so it follows that every once in a blue moon it might have hit on a combo that would get close to a second guess.
