Jim checked is watch. 7:17. If he didn't leave soon, he would never make it to the city in time. He looked at the door again with anticipation "Where is this girl?" he thought to himself. "I told her she needed to be here by 7:20 and I don't see her."
"Breathe," He reminded himself. Your getting antsy in your old age. She still has three, no two, minutes before she is late.
Why he was so unnerved today. Maybe it was because of the stupid tuxedo he was wearing; or the fact that he was turning old today. "Older" he reminded himself. It's not like today is much different than yesterday. Just one day. "But it's a big day." Not everyday one turns 45. 45! As if that weren't enough, the firm has to have a bit 'thing.'
"OK, put your ego in check." He reminded himself. It wasn't just about him tonight. As a matter-of-fact, his birthday had only been tacked on as an afterthought. Really they were celebrating a big win over a lousy company that was screwing it's employees. He and his team had spent several years building the case, and the settlement had been announced yesterday. Guess if you make the firm millions of dollars, then they want to commemorate that by making you dress up in a silly outfit. But did they have to get a cake?
But that's not really what this is about, either. He finally admitted it. This isn't about tuxedos, or birthdays. It's about not having anyone to go with him. It's about having two fabulous children but needing to trust them to a stranger, who, despite excellent references, can't seem to get somewhere on time.
Jim picked up the stack of mail, he fumbled through the junk and several birthday cards, pretending to care, before he threw the stack back onto the kitchen table. He checked his watch again. 7:19.
As he took yet another breath to calm down, and as he exhaled, the doorbell rang.
