The Baker's Assistant (closed)

"Shall we go to dinner?" Kayla asked with a smile as she grabbed the sling for Lynndon. "He'll be back asleep very soon and will hopefully sleep until dark."

"Sure," Aleister nodded and tucked Lynndon into the sling once she had it on. Dazu headed home so they had dinner to themselves at the tavern and all sorts of friends and neighbors came to congratulate Kayla. Thankfully, though, the tavern was always fairly quiet at that time of night so Lynndon slept easily.

It was obvious to anyone that saw her that Kayla was very in love with her son. She never let anyone beside Aleister hold the baby while they were out. She would constantly fuss over him like a first time mother would. She had to blush as Ria commented on that, a smile on her lips as she thought about all of the things that she wanted to do for that little boy in his lifetime.

"His grandmother should be here soon." Kayla said softly, looking at Aleister from across the table in the quiet tavern. "I'm a little nervous about her coming here, but I know she will be over the moon to see him."

"Why be nervous?" Aleister raised an eyebrow. He still didn't know Emma well enough to understand her.

"Not my mother." Kayla said with a slight smile on her lips. "Marianne. Uncle Brogan invited her to come to Inverness. Officially she's coming to see Kate, but I wanted to give her time with Lynndon as well. He's her only family in the world."

She looked down at the little boy asleep against her chest. He looked so much like his father that it made her heart ache slightly. Marianne deserved all the time in the world she could have with her grandson.

"Oh... Well, hell. Now I'm nervous an' I've got nothin' t'do with it." He knew, however, that being so close with Kayla and her son meant he'd probably come into contact with the Queen of Scotland, and that trumped the dance at the keep months before by a long shot. But he was still most concerned for Kayla. He noticed the look in her eyes when she looked down at Lynndon, and Aleister reached out to touch her hand to let her know she had his support.

Kayla squeezed his hand as he took hers, giving his support. She turned her eyes towards him, a slight smile on her lips.

"It hurts less when I think about him. I just wish he could have gotten to meet his son, even for the briefest of moments." She said softly as Lynndon squirmed slightly before settling back into his slumber. "His entire family was taken by an illness. No one knows what caused it. I suppose that one day we'll have to be watchful of Lynndon too."

"Well hopefully without tha' kind o' stress that Princes an' Kings take on, he'll stand a better chance even if it does affect 'im." Aleister glanced down at Lynndon and found fear in his own heart that the boy might suffer such pain one day. "Even if he does get sick... We've got th'best resources this side o' the world t'take care of 'im."

Kayla nodded, pressing her nose against his soft hair and breathing in the sweet scent of her son. He could always lift her spirits when she was feeling down. Glancing at Aleister once more, she felt a little blush come to her cheeks.

"Can we stay with you tonight, Aleister? I don't really feel like being alone tonight." She asked quietly, knowing that the idea was scandalous to say the least.

"'Course ya can. Y'hardly need to ask."

When they returned to the bakery, Aleister stoked the fire in his den and sat down to relax on the small sofa.

In Aleister's little home, Kayla got Lynndon changed, fed and tucked into bed. Once the baby was asleep, she came to Aleister's side and settled next to him, her head resting against his shoulder.

"The lad wears me out." She admitted, looking up at her friend with a slight smile on her lips. "But he's very worth it."

"Y'know I'll be glad t'help whenever y'need," he reminded her with a smile. "So what made ya want t'stay over, out o' curiosity?"

Kayla shrugged her shoulders as he asked her that, not really prepared to tell him why she wanted to stay. Her house was lonely without him there. As much as she loved her little home, it felt so empty lately.

"Because I missed you." She said finally, her cheeks turning pink as she looked up towards him. "And my house feels like it's missing something when you aren't there."

Aleister couldn't help the smile on his face. It was soft as ever, but a hint of boyish excitement at the prospect of being on his love's mind could be detected. "C'mere," he murmured, taking a small leap by drawing her into his lap and wrapping her up in his sure and adoring embrace.

Kayla felt herself melt at the boyish grin that he flashed at her. She chuckled softly as he pulled her into his lap and held her tightly. It felt so incredibly good to be in his arms. She had missed simple hugs and it felt right to be there in Aleister's embrace.

"Now would be the perfect time to kiss me, love." She murmured softly in a low voice, looking up at him with her clear blue eyes.

With a chuckle, Aleister was all too happy to take her advice and meet her with an adoring kiss. He wasn't so timid about showing his affection anymore after all they'd been through together.

Kayla let out a happy little sigh as Aleister kissed her. In private they were unafraid to show each other how they felt. In public, they were still reserved and slightly distant. She enjoyed loving him so much more, however.

"We should talk to my Da about us." She said softly as the kiss ended. "I'm ready to show everyone how much I care about you."

"I'd like tha', but are y'sure he's ready?" Aleister asked softly. Understanding as Boar could be with her and even though Aleister was an old brother-in-arms, Boar was still a force to be reckoned with as well as his siblings who had adored Kayla all her life especially when she'd kept the family from falling apart when she was born.

"I think he's ready. He's had a long time to get use to the idea. Uncle Brogan had already given me his blessing. It will make things easier." She murmured softly as she rested her cheek against his broad chest. "Besides, we can butter him up by letting him hold Lynndon as we have that discussion. He can't resist the boy."

"Hm... I suppose we ought to, then." He smiled and sat back, keeping her close. "I want 'im t'know 'is daughter an' grandson're with someone that'd do anythin' fer 'em." He'd proven that already to Kayla, but Boar and Emma would be a little tougher.

"You take good care of us. Lynn loved you so much already. It's all that I could ask for." Kayla said as she felt him relax beneath her. "And I love you too."

"Hearin' tha' never fails t'make me feel like th'luckiest man in th'world." He pressed another, even warmer kiss to her lips. "I love you too, Kay."

"I never thought I'd hear those words against after Gale." Kayla said softly. "I'm happy that you're the one telling me that."

She could always talk to Aleister when she was missing Gale. He never made her feel bad for her previous relationship. They were both safe in the knowledge that they loved one another deeply and had been friends for so long.

"I didn't have a choice but t'fall in love, an' I glad for it," Aleister murmured as he laid his head against her own. "Y'could steal th'hardest heart."

"Your's wasn't hard to steal." Kayla teased as Aleister rested his head against her own, her lips finding his once more. "You just had to wait for the right woman to come along. Now you have me and a baby. An instant family."
