Random mutations are the single biggest factor in causing cancer, researchers reaffirmed Thursday.

About two-thirds of the genetic mutations that lead to cancer happen simply because of random errors made as cells divide and not because of diet, chemicals or inherited genes, the team at Johns Hopkins University said.

"We hope that this research offers comfort to the literally millions of patients who have had cancer but who have lived nearly perfect lifestyle — who have never smoked, who have avoided the sun … who exercise regularly," Dr. Bert Vogelstein of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center told a news conference.

"It's not your fault. Nothing you did or didn't do was responsible for your illness."

I was just discussing this with someone who has cancer again, how society seems to look for preventable reasons for cancer and/or it's reoccurrence.

As an aside since it has chosen to once again to attack an innocent loved one, Fuck Cancer!

I'm sure that any caveman fortunate enough to not have been eaten by the ripe old age of 16 dropped dead at nineteen from some kind of cancer. :)

Mayo Clinc scientists on the trail of a 'pan cancer' test

Mayo Clinic is in a race against itself on a project that could revolutionize cancer care, as two research teams pursue a “pan cancer” test that could detect the presence and severity of multiple types of the disease.

On one side is Dr. David Ahlquist in Rochester and his partnership with Exact Sciences, which together already produced a home test for colon cancer known as Cologuard.

On the other is Dr. Keith Stewart in Scottsdale, Ariz., and a Mayo partnership with Grail, a start-up company with the financial backing of Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, which launched a large breast cancer screening trial this month.

Both teams believe that a simple blood draw and analysis could soon produce a way to screen for a dozen types of cancer. Both are taking advantage of improved understanding of human genetics and cancer tumors, and technological advances that track genetic activities that were once beyond detection.

But if you look at how past relations have died you can pretty much tell how you will die. Cancer gets grandfolk on both sides, you ain't dying of a heart attack. Breast and ovarian cancer are certainly inheritable chances.

I think the human being in the wild has a lifespan of about 40 years old. After that heart attacks and cancer start to kick in.

If they died fighting in WWII, one should probably prepare themselves for the worst. :)

This thread reminded me of a Salon article I read a few years back. It's a disturbing and sad article but I think that some people in this thread would like to read it.

Oh here it is.

Who fakes having cancer?

Two women in one week are busted for pretending to be terminally ill. They're far from the only pranksters.

When Lori Stilley said she had Stage 3 bladder cancer and no health insurance, her New Jersey community rallied around her, hosting fundraisers and delivering meals to her home. They got together to help her throw her dream wedding. The response was so inspiring, she even penned an e-book about the experience and sold copies of it at $14.99 a pop. Then, a year ago, she had a miraculous turnaround, and her cancer seemed to go into remission. It struck her friends as being a little too miraculous — they became suspicious. This week, Stilley was arrested on charges of fraud by deception and released on $25,000 bail. Prosecutor Robert Bernardi called her actions “extremely cruel.”

Cruel, yes, but surprisingly not uncommon. Just this Wednesday, Jami Lynn Toler, the Phoenix woman who falsely claimed she had breast cancer to raise money for implants, was sentenced to a year in jail.

If anybody else knows of similar articles, I think this would be a great thread to post them in, in honor of the real cancer survivors.:)

Then don't start one, I posted an article for discussion for the participants in this thread. If you don't feel safe enough posting here, I am sure Laurel can arrange for another, safer forum for you.

What kind of person would fake cancer just for attention? There are some really shitty people out there.

That kind of person would likely be struggling with some other personal and mental challenges to stoop to such desperate means to get attention.
They may not actually have cancer, but they are still unwell and should seek professional help. :)

Ian McKellen was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006. He's been examined regularly and hasn't needed treatment.

My family doctor retired last year, so the new guy wanted me to get a whole range of blood work done as a baseline (that's a standard billing scam in a single payer system, btw).

Dude gets the results, and at the next appt asks me if I had my prostate removed.

I'm like, what? Not that I know of, why?

Turns out my prostate markers are like zero...he declared that I have the "prostate of an 18 year old".

Pretty awesome, eh?

Easy prostate health test.

When you piss at a urinal, if you fart at the beginning, prostate's great.

Halfway through...you're okay.

At the end or not at all?...get that looked into.

Thrope, he's talking to you. Check your farts.

I think Robert De Niro may have taken that advice. He's a survivor of prostate cancer.
