Matt Teague woke up early as he had been doing for years. Although he had too much time on his hands, he didn't like sleeping in. Years of training and early morning work outs were hard habits to break. Before his most recent concussion, he had been in the midst of another comeback. As a high draft pick of the NFL, a lot more was expected of him than he was ever able to accomplish. But his career never flourished. Just as he appeared to be making strides, the tackle he made in training camp last week knocked him out. As he was helped to the sidelines by the trainers, the writing on the wall was all too clear.
Matt fixed a quick breakfast then went for a jog. When he got home he undressed and prepared for a shower. He paused and looked at his chiseled naked body in the mirror. He looked the epitome of health and strength. He glared at the reflection and pushed the shoulder length brown hair off his face and squinted with his deep blue eyes at the face looking back at him, angry at the unseen weakness inside that had derailed his life.
After the shower he dressed and sat on the bed not knowing what he was going to do now. After a short reflection, he realized he had to get away. He packed up a bag of clothes and a few supplies and began the drive to his recently passed away grandfather's cabin. It was an eight hour drive but that didn't phase a man with nothing but time and plenty of money. Mostly unearned money from his first contract, but his money none the less.
It felt good to get out of the city, then the suburbs, and into the increasingly rural area. After about six hours of driving it was very desolate and the traffic was almost nonexistent. The woods were getting thicker and the roads windier. He turned onto the final stretch of rural road and almost missed the private drive of his grandfather's property since no one had been there in a few years and it was becoming overgrown.
He parked the SUV outside the cabin just as it was turning dark. The thick tree cover added to the darkness and made it seem even later than it was. There was a lot to do to clean the place up but that didn't daunt Matt. It would keep him busy for a while and give him plenty of time to figure out what he would do with the rest of his life.
He peed into the weeds and found a broom on the porch and began wiping away cobwebs from the porch and windows. He went inside and opened the windows to let some fresh air into the dusty cabin and began wiping away the spider webs from the furniture.
After a few hours, he found some dry wood and started a small bonfire in the clearing behind the cabin. He grabbed the cooler of beer from the SUV and used it as a chair as he watched the fire and drank the beer. The flames danced and the heat felt good in the cool night. As the fire died down he realized he was exhausted, went inside and laid down on the couch in his clothes since the cabin was cold. He fell asleep almost instantly without any sounds to distract him.
