The German Problem.

and specifically, Kindfarmer, what's your take on the US-UK recent fracking deal?

I'd appreciate if you elaborated further.

See, I'm in tune with how equally Machavelic the US and Russian empires are.
That Eastern Europe would be better off being an American rather than a Russian colony, is a separate story.

But I'm struggling to get my head around this energy stuff.

Until a few years ago we were like: no coal, no fracking, they're destroying the Planet, only wind, solar or Litthium-powered electric energy.
Now countries are doing a 180.
Is it because of the energy crisis caused by the war? Or the realisation that eco-sources are not sustainable ?
It’s a purely situational thing. Your statement about renewables and their sustainability is completely wrong. On so many levels. “Sustainable” is not the adjective you would want to use when arguing for the use of fossil fuel. Lord. Why would you make such a ridiculous claim when examples of exactly the opposite are all over the world? I have a town of 1100 people 30 miles away from me and produce 115% of their energy through wind turbines. Germany derives roughly the same amount of energy from renewables as NG. Many islands and other communities around the world are completely carbon neutral. It can all be scaled up. And in terms of economic impact? The switch to renewables is the greatest economic opportunity in the history of legal tender. So is sequestration, of Carbon from the atmosphere which is a must. carbon neutral yesterday doesn’t mean jack shit. The tipping point is tipped. The permafrost melting.

I was thinking about the solar (solar pannels on houses' rooftops) and electricity (as in electric bikes or tesla cars).
I read somewhere that it's hard to recycle solar pannels, they'll exist forever, and Lithium-based batteries are either very expensive to replace, or hard to recycle.

That --as climate-destroying as the old sources are, the new ones aren't 100% either.

With a cost/benefit analysis, are we surprised that, in the wake of the Ukraine war energy-cost of living crisis,
Europe is goinf back to coal?

Solar panels are silicates. SAND!
100% recyclable. The same with the batteries. And we will quickly move beyond lithium technology just as the solar technology is always improving. That’s the beauty of renewables. That’s not gonna happen with fossil fuels. Never in any way shape or form. No energy source needed this winter is relevant to the argument whatsoever in terms of what we should be deriving our energy from. That is just more justification for renewable sources. Isn’t one of the goals of both sides of the political spectrum energy independence? That’s not gonna happen with fossil fuels. It’s just not. The cost benefit analysis is heavily in favor of today’s renewable technology. Something like 100 to 1 maybe much more. Especially if we would incentivize sequestration of carbon from the atmosphere, the building materials would be furnished via the fossil fuel sins.

I must say. I sincerely appreciate your willingness to exchange by banter and ideas. Thank you. Sincerely

In interest, of accuracy, a few days ago, Germany walked back it's defense buildup plan. In fact, they said, it won't be years before they even get to 2%, of the NATO pledge made long ago.

...

The only peaceful resolution that I can see is for the Russian people to rise up and take out Putin and his cronies and then resolve itself into being a source of raw materials for the rest of Europe and abandon any pretense of being a major continental power. Can they? Will they?

What say you?
"Anatomy of Revolution"

Only the middle-class revolts, the poor have no means and the wealthy have no need. The Russian system precludes a vibrant middle class.

They have middle class in Moscow and St. Petersburg. :p

Germany is the USA of Europe.

Just like the USA it will beef up its security and secure energy supplies.

Germany’s relationship with Russia is stronger and better than any other Western nation’s.

There’s a deal to be made that benefits both.

More to your point, the middle class are good at stirring up the peasants.

In a parallel, Macron is demanding people stop spreading panic about impending blackouts...

;) ;)

Where's Bob Barker when you need him?

They going to have to get rid of Zelensky to make it work?

Not under my plan.

But they havent asked for a copy, so there’s that.

I think Z is secondary to the energy supply and revenues by a long stretch.

Snail is wrong.

Russia needs to smarten up and join the 21st Century.
From your link. Scholz also reiterated his goal of boosting German defence spending to meet the 2%-of-GDP target set for NATO allies, including with the expansion of air defence for a so-called Sky Shield with other NATO states.

That target has been a goal unmet for decades.

Germany walked back its enhanced spending, https://www.reuters.com/business/ae...r-100-billion-euro-pledge-sources-2022-10-27/

Snail isnt wrong after all

Ya need to dig a little deeper. It's obvious you haven't done your homework. The Manufacturing process is a big secret, you'd cringe if you knew!

Solar panels will never produce the grid energy output required to power large cities. We could be totally carbon neutral with nuclear energy, to remove that option is foolish. The highest efficiency rating for the best panels money can buy is 35%, FUTURE TARGET EFFICIENCY RATING 55%. But that efficiency come with a cost.

Waste stream management is never discussed, I wonder why?

Panels are 95% silicates but you gloss over another fact, other ingredient like lead and cadmium are both carcinogens and are always a threat to pollute water sources

Old panels cannot be easily recycled, it's an expensive process which at this time is not cost effective, so, panels litter our landfills.

Solar panels can't make themselves. To convert silicate into solar panels requires extensive mining capacity and large amounts of energy ( coal ) during the manufacturing process, conveniently hidden behind the Chinese border. Paying Peter to pay Paul. Whether you pollute here or there the process still leave behind a large carbon footprint somewhere on the planet.

Large solar farms affect habitat. You can't build thousands of square miles of solar farms and expect 0 impact on the environment, eco-systems or indigenous wildlife.
