The roar of the canons always woke him up
It was strange because they weren’t even the loudest thing that faithful stormy day. No his fathers ship slamming into the pirate hunters ship had been much more louder that night sounding out above the thunder and the lighting crashing down all around them. It had been a fools ideas born out of no other real choice. His dad’s ship the Ghost was outgunned by the hunter ship and the surprise attack had crippled their sails and left them unable to get away or put up a real right dad was a good sailor and an even better pirate but even he knew when he was outmatched.
Of course his son was on board, which was why he couldn’t give up. Angel shouldn’t have even been on the ship that day in the first place; his father had been on one of his rare visits to his mother when he snuck aboard the ship and hid in the cargo hold. He was ten years old at the time and his head was filled with dreams of being a fearsome pirate just like his dad. He snuck aboard in hopes that his dad would find him and make him first mate; teach him how to be a fearsome pirate so they could both be the bane of the sea.
Instead he had been pissed, telling Angel off for sneaking aboard and telling his crew to turn back around. His father’s words still rung in his ears some times.
“A pirate ship is no place for a boy”
Angel slowly rose out of bed, pushing the memories back into his mind as he ignored the naked girls sleeping on either side of him. He carefully extracted himself from the bed and turned pausing to swipe the rum nestled in the middle of their clothes and taking a deep refreshing swig of the liquid. It helped chase away the last of the dream and Angel turned pulling on his simple leggings and white shirt before putting his two crisscrossing bandoliers on. Most of his weapons and clothes were still on his ship The Ghost named after his fathers own ship. She was a decent Brig with six sails, a gun deck sporting forty canons, and a naval ram that could tear up even the toughest Man O War’s she was his most prized possession and he and his crew took as much care of it as if it was their own mother.
He pulled on his brown boots and went to the door gently opening it and wincing as the harsh Caribbean sunlight hit him, he saw a few monkeys scampering after a rat and he ignored them instead waving at a few passing civilians as he stepped onto the dirt street. Nassau was thriving well, between his leadership and the other pirate captains most of the slaves had houses to call their own as well as freedom. Angel still remembered when he had showed up to save them attacking the fleet they were sailing under and taking control of the ships they were being transported in. Most of them couldn’t believe he had come to save them instead of turn a profit on them and it was only until they were safely on the island that would become Nassau that they began to relax and celebrate their freedom.
“Angel!” his first mate Waley called walking up to him and nodding “Mr. Skims wants to speak to you at the meeting house”
“Did he say what for?” Angel asked walking with the man towards the meeting house “Please tell me he doesn’t have another ridiculous request for us”
Mr. Skims was the “mayor” of Nassau he was the tribal chief of the tribe of Africans on the ship and when they began to colonize Nassau every one turned to him for leadership. Angel was fine to let him run the day-to-day things, he was still a pirate after all and his crew was always itching to go pull more and more cargo to sell from the seas. He and the other pirate captains helped him rule as more and more people came to Nassau and its “free” state.
“He said he would only talk to the captain of the ship” Whaley said shaking his head in disgust “the man is getting a bigger head than you Angel and I don’t like it one bit”
“Easy Whaley” Angel said clapping his back and reaching the towns main square “Soon we will be out on the high seas again making our fortune for now go get a drink” Angel said handing him a few coins “on me”
Whaley nodded and left joining some of the others at the simple bar set up. Angel paid him no mind, instead walking up to the house they were using as a meeting point. The others had yet to arrive so he leaned against the wooden post drinking the last of his rum and waiting.
