Avent sat in his office looking out over the city. Not for the first time he was struck by how many trees there were here. When on the ground it was easy to lose sight of them all, but, from 30 stories in the air, one's perspective changed dramatically.
It was Monday morning, and for the first week of June the weather was rather nice, and he could see for miles and miles. To one side of him was the Missouri river and to the left was the city in all of it arboreal splendor. It was a smaller metropolitan area, with just enough of a night life to keep it for completely boring, but not quite large enough to sate some of his more carnal desires.
All things considered, by the age of 30 he had worked his way up to the position of assistant vice president of a major regional bank. The reason he had made it to this position was a relentless attention to detail and firm control over a hand picked team that handled all reporting matters for the call center.
That hand picked process met a nasty speed bump Friday afternoon when his boss gave him the personnel file of the summer intern. Avent glanced at the file again and muttered to himself. He wasn't in favor of business majors. Give him math, statistics, or economics majors any time. They made good analysts, and report builders. Business majors had a ton of ideas on how to run things, but little or no experience in how to really do things.
However all of that ends when the neighbor of the bosses boss is looking for an internship. She was hand picked by someone but not him. For what it was worth, her essay was good, her thoughts were cogent.
"Screw it," he muttered as he sipped from his coffee, "I can always use a hand in one fashion or another."
He looked up at the knock on his door and lo, there she was on time. Right at 8:00 AM. She was wearing a white dress that accented her burnished skin and black hair. She had beautiful brown eyes and fantastic legs. Standing he held out his right hand, and pointed at the chair opposite him with the left. "I am Avent Bordeaux, welcome aboard."
