Well, hell...
Now, isn't this a fine pickle... The house I just moved into has a relatively new (3-5 years?) combination central heating/air conditioning unit - that's good. It's standard air conditioning (freon or something) on the cooling side, and gas (?!) on the heating side - well, that's something I never experienced living in Florida. The a/c side works fine, I discovered two weeks ago when the temp was in the 80s.
However, temps this week have dropped into the low 50s at night, and are expected to get to 42 Saturday night/Sunday morning. That's a little chilly for my thinned-out blood. So... maybe I should try out the heat side of the unit today, just to make sure I know how to work it. Turn the thermostat control to "Heat," push the temperature control level about 8 degrees above what the thermometer reads... and I'm rewarded with what sounds like gas going through a burner from the unit outside the window. After 5 or 8 minutes, the air handler still isn't moving any air around inside the house, though.
Hmmm... well, let's take my mechanically-inept self out to the unit and see what's happening. Hmmm... nice gas-through-burner sound, air being expelled from this little square thing here on the side... oh! "Warning! Do not touch hot surface!" Ummm... it's not hot. Go look at gas meter. No little dials spinning, but then, the smallest measurement seems to be a quarter of a cubic foot. Surely, it doesn't use very many of those - does it? I dunno.
Call landlady. "I dunno. It should work when you turn the thermostat on. I have the manual somewhere - want me to look for it?" Uh, yeah... well, no, you have a hot weekend date out of town with a guy you've been talking to for three years, and it starts tomorrow morning. You have other things to worry about.
Go to Amana website, go to manuals page. Gee, they have a lot of different models! Go out in the dark to get model number from side of unit. Try to read 12-character alphanumeric model number by light of butane lighter. Go back in the house, hunt for flashlight (remember, I just moved in two weeks ago). Find flashlight and big container of binder clips. Stop playing with binder clips, take flashlight, go out and get model number. Go back to Amana website, go to manuals page. "Model number invalid." Go back outside, doublecheck model number. "Model number invalid." Oh, hell.
Perhaps I ought to think about finding my wooly socks and long-johns for Saturday night and Sunday morning. Maybe I should think about going to church Sunday morning, just to get warm. Nahhh... the roof would cave in and everyone at Lit would miss me. Well, almost everyone? Someone?
