According to Merriam-Webster, they have pink flowers - so maybe that's why so many Peeps are pink?

Woweee. Thank you, Winston. I had absolutely no idea.
You're quite welcome. All I did was as you suggested: Google it, then pick one of the suggested links that said, "Why is a marshmallow called that?"

Well crap, I had a picture of peep bondage, but I can't remember how to post it.

I am waiting for my halloween peeps to get just right so that I can eat them....:D

I took a Civil Service Exam today. It took me 18 minutes to complete a test with a maximum time limit of two hours. I either did really well or really poorly.

Anyway, the topic tonight is semicolons. You know, these thingies? " ; "

I have always had a mental block on the little suckers and how to use them. I will rewrite a paragraph just so I can avoid using the damn thing.

I am wondering, in the following sentence, is the use of a semi colon appropriate?

"In the event that you fail to meet the requirements of your probation; you will be terminated at will."

I am thinking this needs a comman. What say you literate litsters?

:)

Go for the comma. :)

It's a comma, MissT.

I'll try to keep it simple. To use a semi colon, there must be two complete sentences related to the same thought on each side of the semi colon. Otherwise, the comma is appropriate.

Any time you start a sentence with a prepositional phrase (In the event ...), you will usually have to use a comma to connect the thoughts.

Try this example: In the event that you fail to meet the requirements of your probation, you will be terminated; you can appeal the decision at a later date. (Two complete, related sentences joined by a semi colon)

When I think I want to use a semi colon, I read what's on both sides of where I want the pause. If there is a complete sentence on both sides, I use the semi. Otherwise, I use a comma.

That's correct, Miss T. (I just checked it in a writing text. ) The writers put it well. "If you can change the comma to a period and the resulting sentences are grammatically correct, you should be using a semi colon."

Here's a slightly different example. You said: "In the event that you fail to meet the requirements of your probation; you will be terminated at will."

Change it to: "In the event that you fail to meet the requirements of your probation. You will be terminated at will."

You have an incomplete sentence in the first part; it has no real verb or direct object. The second part is still not very grammatically pretty; the "at will" is unnecessary. Since you only have one and a half sentences, a comma is needed.

Anyone remember

who posted the thinly veiled sarcasm "How to post to a bulletin board" clip? It had a slightly 50s/60s "What to do in case of a nuclear attack" feel to it. If it's in a unique thread unto itself, i'd like to bump it. If not, i'm about to make one and reference it with a click me.
