The Isolated Politics Blurt Thread I: A New Beginning

I really appreciate her honesty here. And she really hits home (she's good at that) about her position. It's important for professors and authority figures to remain objective as they help teach a world of new students into the law.

But law relies on norms. And we've seen a major disruption to norms in the past several years.

"I really hope that this is the last election in my lifetime where decency and civility is seen as a partisan issue"

I second that.

multiple states prepped and ready to file indictments against any trumpies refusing to certify election results

Trump Supporters Warned Against Trying to Stop Certification

"If you don't certify an election at the county level, or certify a canvas, you're going to get indicted," Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said. "We've sent, on top of that, some what I would call sternly-worded letters out to folks to let them know."

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson:
"We've got great attorneys that we're working with at the attorney general's office, who are prepared as well, who were there in 2020 and ready to go," she said.

"It's more about just making sure we're able to rapidly respond and are prepared to ensure that the law is followed."

Gabriel Sterling, the chief operating officer of the Georgia secretary of state's office:
"the courts won't allow" a county hold up the state and refuse to certify.
"With the system we have in place, with the lawyers we have in place, we have game-planned a lot of this out," he said.

just another republican crim running for office

A Republican candidate for the Indiana House of Representatives was arrested on the eve of the election on Monday after being accused of violating a protection order.

Jim Schenke, 57, a delegate for the state’s 26th House district, was booked into Tippecanoe County Jail after police received a complaint late that he had allegedly contacted an individual on Facebook who has a protection order against him, according to The Lafayette Journal and Courier.

He was booked into jail in the early hours of Monday morning but subsequently paid a $250 cash bond to secure his release.

According to the state registry, the politician, who is seeking to represent West Lafayette, currently has two protection orders against him: one from a local attorney and their staff. Schenke, meanwhile, has a protection order against a person living in his neighborhood.

Schenke resumed campaigning on his release from jail and took to Facebook to deny the allegations against him, claiming he is the real victim.
same old story, forever the victim

MAGA Mega-Donor Bernie Marcus Dies on Election Day

Born 1929 in New Jersey to a family of Russian Jewish immigrants, Marcus co-founded Home Depot in 1979 and served on the company’s board until his retirement in 2002.

Throughout his life, he donated millions of dollars to Republican political figures, including Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis. During his later years, he made repeat appearances on right-wing news outlets in support of Trump’s presidential aspirations and accomplishments, stating in a 2022 interview with the Financial Times that “woke people have taken over the world” and that modern Americans have become work-shy on account of being “lazy,” “fat” and “stupid.”

i won't pretend to be sad he's passed... i'd never even heard of him. His opinions seem to line up perfectly with trumpism.

it must be a real bummer, though, to do all that donating to and promoting of a felon only to die on the day of the election without knowing the result.

i can't decide if carlson's angling for a televangelist job or if he's setting up precedence of mental instability when it comes to being tried for his role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. First the 'demon attacked me' story and now this:

“Human sacrifice”: Tucker Carlson says abortion is to blame for freak hurricanes

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson said on Monday that he believes climate change is caused by abortions, not burning fossil fuels.
Striking a religious note, Carlson attributed continuously rising temperatures to the supposed moral failures of American women.

“It’s probably abortion, actually,” Carlson said, later describing the practice as “human sacrifice.” After conceding that he will be “attacked” for his opinion, Carlson added “I really believe it.”

White supremacist planned to blow up electricity station using drone laden with explosives, U.S says

A white supremacist is accused of trying to destroy an electricity substation in Tennessee in an attempt to bring down the regional power network and disrupt American society, authorities said Monday.

Skyler Philippi, 24, of Columbia, Tennessee, was arrested after an FBI investigation found that he planned to attach a bomb to a drone and fly it into the energy facility in Nashville as part of his extremist agenda, authorities said.

In messages to FBI sources, Philippi espoused accelerationist views, a theory popular among far-right extremists that is predicated on large shocks causing chaos and forcing society to change its racial make-up, resulting in a white-only state, authorities said.

Hell’s population just increased by one sick soul.

No flowers for a MAGAt.

Kenyan plotted a 9-11 style attack on US soil... his actions were on behalf of an al-Qaida affiliate group attempting to set up in Somalia

Federal prosecutors, who rested their case Thursday, said Abdullah plotted the attack for four years, undergoing extensive training in explosives and how to operate in secret and avoid detection.

He then moved to the Philippines in 2017 where he began training as a commercial pilot.

Abdullah was almost finished with his two-year pilot training when he was arrested in 2019 on local charges.

He was transferred the following year to U.S. law enforcement authorities, who charged him with terrorism related crimes.

Prosecutors said Abdullah also researched how to breach a cockpit door and information “about the tallest building in a major U.S. city” before he was caught.

no off-the-cuff attack, this one was in the works for years... thank goodness it was foiled when he was arrested 'on local charges'

when the rubes see their local bridges being fixed, the roads improved, new jobs in their areas, good paying union jobs, they'll not say "ooh look, President Biden's infrastructure bills have helped us here"... nope, they'll say ''Ooh SEE???? Trump is great, trump is gooooooood!!! Look how much life's improved for us since he became president!"

David French telling it as it should be (it is pay walled, I read it as one of my freebies)

We Don’t Have Time to Waste Time in Despair

As I was thinking through the election results, two imperatives came to mind: defend the vulnerable and speak the truth.

Trump’s plans are not self-executing. From mass deportation to punitive legal actions, there will be numerous opportunities to challenge him. America is still a Madisonian democracy, and the other branches of government will have their say. There is a role for legislative resistance, even in a Republican-dominated Congress. The filibuster still exists.
And no one should think that the federal courts will simply rubber-stamp Trump’s worst abuses

the fight against his plans (or concepts of plans) will go on, but for now i am taking a step back from politics. It feels like trump's made way too much noise in my life for 10 years or more and simply don't have the energy right now to do what others will continue to do. It's like a working holiday :)

yes, i will still post if something spurs me, but i'm taking the time now the weather's not so hot to catch up outdoors; been busy today with shifting piles of wood around, offloading more, stacking, a start made on the mower (dropping the deck ready to bring it up to the garage to clean and replace a couple of bits with H), and catching up with a binge-watch of Tulsa King which is way better than i expected! Then there's the poetry side of things with a challenge thread i should tend.

If I truly believed that DonOld and the MAGAt "republicans" won the battle of ideas, and will govern to the benefit of the populist workers who apparently got them elected, then I wouldn’t bother with this board - but they didn’t and they won’t - so I am going to enjoy watching them fail and flail as they try to pass a camel through the eye of a needle. And I’m going to let the MAGAts on the PB know about it every time they fail.

👍
