THE LAST ELECTION THREAD!! (I hope!!)

When are the absentee ballots counted? Or has that already been done? Curious how much impact those have in the election.

I hesitate to answer since I seem to jinx everything I answer on this thread so far! LOL

The networks are saying that Bush is so confident of winning because he is sure the absentee ballots in Florida will weigh towards Republican. It seems they had a big campaign to get people to use the absentee voting system. But in this weird election? Who knows!

I'm hearing that the absentee ballots represent mostly military personell, who traditionally vote republican. Go figure.

That would be correct about the absentee ballots mostly going to military personnel. In '96 Clinton kicked the bejesus outta Dole in Florida, but 54% of the absentee vote went to Dole.

Pretty fucking amazing night, dontcha think? Regardless of what happens in Florida, there's still the possibility of recounts in New Hampshire, Iowa and Wisconsin. Although I would hope that both candidates would respect the precedent set by Nixon in the 1960 election and avoid having the presidency decided by a court.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Nixon lost in 1960 by a very slim margin, and lost the state of Illinois by a razor thin margin. Now, anyone familiar with the legacy of Mayor Daley in Chicago knows that voter fraud was a way of life for the Democratic machine at that time. More than likely Nixon could have challenged the returns in the state and may have altered the outcome of the election. Kind of ironic that he chose the high road at that time and kept the country out of a constitutional crisis...

Lasher, maybe you could explain something for me, please.

I have heard a few people saying the House may have to decide this one. What exactly does that mean? The House of Representatives will take their own mini-vote?

Before I become alarmed at the thought of a handful of people deciding this election, I'd like to what the scenario would entail.

Thank you.

This is the one thing in this process that is fairly easy to explain, and I don't think we have to worry about it happening here.

If neither candidate would have the minimum 270 electoral votes required, which really shouldn't happen in this case, then it would be up to the House of Representatives to decide the Presidency. The way the process works, the Representatives from each state would vote amongst themselves, and then each state has one vote for President. For example, California has 52 Representatives, those 52 people would vote, and then California would cast its vote based on the results of that. The winner of the vote amongst the 50 states would then be president. So, if that were the case, then the election would then come down to the votes of 435 people.

But don't expect that to happen in this case. Although, and I just thought of this, the Constiution requires that the Electoral College meet on the 3rd Wednesday in December to elect a president. I'm not sure what will happen if Electors have not yet been selected for states such as Florida, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Oregon which possibly could not be decided by then. That's something I'll have to check into.

Now, as it is, if 538 Electors are present on Dec. 18, the only way this election could go to the house is if we have a 269-269 tie. I really don't expect that to happen. I would hope that both of these men can see beyond their immediate gratification and do what's best for the country and abide by whatever results from the next few days of counting.

It is...

being decided by a handful of people...Floridians...

How about setting the Electoral College on a percentage basis. Not winner take all.

Not just the president.

But Missiouri erlected a cadaver to the Senate, posibly showing more intelegence than the folks in New York.

I guess...

Ashcroft(?) faced some stiff competition.

Sorry...couldn't resist...

Thank you Lasher.

Samauri, they elected a cadaver?

Yep! A former Governor who was running for US Senate was killed in a plane crash a month ago. His name was kept on the ballot, and he won. In fairness to the show me folks, the current govenor has promised to appoint the canidates wife to the position. But how bad would you have to be to lose to some one who's been dead a month?

LMAOROTF Yep, he really stunk up the joint!

LMAO... I guess being the wife of a politician is enough to qualify you to be a Senator...

Btw, that's one that's going to court (the Carnahan thing). The Constitution requires that a Senator be a citizen of the United States and of the State in which he/she is elected.... The question is whether or not a corpse is a citizen (yeh, I know it's a little more complex than that, but it's been a long day, LOL)

LOL. That's my point.

And where are the conspiracy theorists at about that one?? Doesn't anyone else think it's odd that Guiliani developed cancer and had affairs exposed AFTER he decided to run against Hilary?? You know that Bill and the CIA had to set it up somehow... It's too much of a coincidence...

And the had to have hand picked this Lazio guy... Jeez...

Btw, exit polls in Arkansas said that 60% of Arkansans (Arkansasans?? WTF are they??) would vote against Bill if he decides to run for the Senate there.

Lasher, it's either Arkies or Arkansans. The latter is the more acceptable term, which is why I use Arkies. LOL

Yeah, and I guess being the son of a shitty president qualifies you to be President too.

Hillary won an undisputed majority by a wide margin, Bush (might have) won by apparent fraud & by intimidating black voters.

You were saying?

Huh? Ohh, I was saying that some people just don't have much of a sense of humor.

I'll guarantee ya that Hilary knows more about running the government than Rick Lazio does... She's been doing it for 8 years.

But other than being the wife of the late Gov. Carnahan, what exactly qualifies Mrs. Carnahan to be a Senator??? I haven't seen anyone explain that yet...

C'mon, admit it, that WAS a pretty fucking funny post...
