i hate to say it but time. It doesn't help right now, however. i remember the pain of past loves, they eat at you. They eat at you and eat at you until, one day, you realize they aren't eating at you so badly and you realize it is time to move on.

I agree...although I'm not sure there is a permanent cure for losing a Great Love. You simply begin to think about it a bit less often...but when you do, all that feeling is still there. You just don't feel it as frequently.

Although in my case, it's been a year and I still think of her every day. I'm afraid that the only way to really move on from her will be to find a new love...and I'm afraid that until I move on, I'll never really be ready to let her go enough to love someone else. Catch-22.

The hardest thing for me has been trying to give myself permission to move on...to convince myself that it doesn't lessen the goodness and sincerity of what we felt for each other. An article I read recently noted that the decision to move on takes real courage...I'm not sure I'm there yet.

Well, since it's relevant to recent posts, here's what my Great Love wrote to me after she read the poem above. This was about three months after we ended things.


The full moon shone over the treetops last night.
Peace surrounded me.
And even with the joy in my life.
That loss is still there.

Love endures.
Although the future may not be intertwined.
Great love can mean great loss.
But the heart's capacity to heal
is everlasting.

I hope that she's right...I know my heart still needs more healing.
