The night time stopped.

Jill

I looked up at Dave as our friends arrived.
"Ah, looks like our guests are here, Darling," I said with a smile. Then when they did not immediately get out of the car, I added,"But then again, maybe we should give them some privacy."

Pulling him out of their line of sight, I leaned against him and placed his arms around my waist while I looked up at the sky. The fireworks were going to start any minute and the only thing I liked better than fireworks was my boyfriend...scratch that-fiance.

David:

she was right.Give them privacy. As we leaned back to gaze at the stars we saw a weird light...

startled gaze

I hear him saying as we park the car, My one true love, love of my life…I have to ask this again, what were you going to ask me earlier?

Gawd I wish he’d juss get out a the car and join his friends. Why had I even brought this up? Rick was a super guy, funny, smart even, plenty a looks…well maybe a little slow in the fashion department, but whatever…but true love? Of my life? I felt like a kid and I was older than him. But I had to do or say something.

Leaning over to him, my face inches from his, holding his hand in my lap, hoping that between the perfume, the dark puppy eyes and the glossy lips I could make him buy anything. Bating the eyes.

Rick, I…uh…mean…we should…we’re…

My eyes trying to hold his, but I can’t, they keep sliding away to where Jill was sitting with her guy Dave. Jill and Dave. Jill. Forcing myself to meet his questioning, startled gaze. But still seeing Jill. Tall fit brown haired Jill.

What Melissa? I mean come on? He says frustrated.

We’re…we’re gonna miss the fireworks if I tell you now. We can’t do that can we?

Jill

I look at Dave.
"Did you just see that wierd light go by in the sky? I wonder if it was some fireworks that misfired."

Somehow though I kinda doubted it. It really didnt look or feel like fireworks. And there was something too. It was alomost like I could feel it pass as well as see it.

burst

we’re gonna miss the fireworks if I tell you now. We can’t do that can we?

as soon as I spoke it was like sone massive cluster burst went off in the sky behind me...but as soon as I turned...thinking the fireworks had started...thinking I would be spared mt confession for now...I realized that I hadn't seen anything...I had felt it like heat on the back of my neck...

I looked at Melissa, not knowing what to say. She had just given me the great brush off and it hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks. I looked at her with wide eyes before I took off my seatbelt and got out of the car, closing the door behind me. I didn't know what I could do or say, it was bugging me.

I turned to see that Melissa was getting out of the car and then walked over to where David and Jill said and gave an exasperrated sigh, "Women, I have no idea what to do with them."

David:

No it didnt feel or look a misfired firework.Something felt wrong, almost evil about it.I couldnt wait anymore."Hey you guys comming or what?," i called to my friends in the car...

Jill

Extracting myself from Dave's arms, I walked over to where Mellisa was getting out of the car.

"Hey, Girl," I said, looking at her in concern,"Whats up with you and Rick? That is not an 'I am a happy girl' look on your face."

I glanced over to where Rick and Dave were deep in conversation-probabaly about the upcoming Super Bowl if I knew them and then back to Mellisa. In the short time I had known her we had become close enough to share confidences and I hoped she would let me in on this one if for no other reason than she did look miserable right about now.

fright

Oh Jill, the tears actually coming out of my eyes.

And she is surprised but gives a small hug. "That is not an 'I am a happy girl' look on your face."

Oh girlfriend I think I juss started out the New Year in a major bad way, he's a great guy and I really really like him, but I juss screwed up, the words pouring out of me.

But the guys were not in the loving patient mode. At least not my guy. And who could blame? They seemed to be aggitated about something and I knew this was no time to go any further with Jill.

And anyway, the fine hairs on my arms and on the back of my neck seemed to still be standing up, like from some terrible fright, but was it from that heat flash I had felt?

Jill

I looked at Mellisa and nodded. I knew how she felt-sometimes there was just no winning in a relationship, you just had to roll with the punches.

Looking at my watch it showed midnight and I looked up into the sky thinking there would be fireworks any minute. But the sky was clear. Except for the one ball of light there was nothing and it puzzled me.

Smiling at Mellisa I said,"Hey, Rick isnt the type to take anything personally. Dont worry. By the way you look great. How many changes did you go through before he finally made it to your house?"

I got a small laugh out of her as she stepped out of the car and we went over to where the guys were standing. Sure enough they were talking about football and who was going to smear who into the ground or however they said it. Personally Mellisa and I made it a point to plan a shopping trip on the day of the 'big game' and stay out of their hair.

Going up to Dave, I said,"Hon, I have midnight, shouldnt the fireworks be started already? This is too weird. Either we are in the wrong place or they cancelled them."

I looked back down at my watch and it still read midnight. Strange, shouldnt that be a few minutes after midnight?

Rick

I looked at my watch and then at everyone, "Ummm guys, what the fuck is going on. My watch is saying that its 12:00 and that is all that it is saying. Hell, even the seconds aren't moving."

I then looked over the water and saw that there was nothing happening, nothing at all.

lights

At first I was so wrapped up in talking to Jill that I didn't notice how the guys were getting all worked up. They were shaking their wrists and kept saying "what the fuck?" and stuff. So what the fuck? I thought wondering what their problem was.

Then I saw something truly weird. I knew this place, in high school we would sit and watch the jets approach the airport, one after another like a string of lights in the sky. Dreaming about being on a plane and getting away from parents and high school. Making out in our cars. And I could see those lights now. A half dozen clusters of lights, red wing and tail lights clustered around bright white landing lights. But they weren't moving. Not at all. And I knew that couldn't be.

Jill

This was weirding me out bad. I looked at all of them one at a time and said,"This is not funny. If you guys are trying to pull a prank on Mellisa and I..." But I stopped. I could tell by their faces that that wasnt the answer.

I turned looked around me and then it struck me. It was quiet. Way too quiet. Living in the city, you get used to all kinds of noises and I could not hear one noise. No cars, no voices, no animals that should be living out here on the edge of the city.

Panicking a little I rushed to Dave's car and noticed that the music that we had been dancing to just a few minutes ago was silent. I knew Dave had not turned off the radio, in fact the lights to the radio were still glowing but there was no sound-not from the radio or the car which he had left on for the music.

Getting slowly out from the car, I said in a very frightened voice,"Okay guys, I am now officially scared!"

I looked at Lisa and said, "Do you think that you are scared. I am officially wigged, there is something weird going on."

I then looked up at the sky and saw that there were planes staying still in the sky, not going anywhere. What was going on with time as it had seemed to have stopped, but that was impossible- wasn't it?

Jill

I nod at Rick's statement and look to where his eyes are latched on the planes in the sky. Turning to Dave, I say,"Dave, honey, I think we need to get out of here and get some answers. This is too freaky and I want to see if its the same way in the city."

Looking at the cars I add,"We are going to have to walk. I dont think the cars are going to work. We need to know if we are the only ones experiencing this strange phenomonon or not."

Looking back into the sky I add to myself,"And I hope its not just us all going crazy."

Melissa and fashions

What are you talking about Jill? I ask with my mouth open. Come on, this is juss the millenium joke thing right? Some crazy TV special effects? Like when they made the statue of liberty disapeared?

The looks are their faces were not encouraging.

Time can't stand still! I say with a stamp of my foot, My gawd, how would the Spring fashions ever come in?

"Time has stopped Melissa. I don't know how or even why and can't you think of anything other than fashion for once?"

Rick walked over to Melissa and looked into her eyes, seeing that she was a little scared to at what was happening and took her into his arms before kissing her on the cheek and saying, "I don't know what is happening but I think that we are probably the only ones that haven't been infected. I hope that I am wrong though."

Jill

Reaching into Dave's car, I extracted my long leather jacket and slung it around my shoulders.

"Well, we arent going to get any answers by standing here. I suggest we get into town and find them," I said as I started off down the road cursing myself for wearing my fancy boots instead of sensible shoes.

Trying to calm Mellisa down, I said over my shoulder,"Tell you what, we will check out the mall first. They were supposed to have that food festival there for the New Years. It should be really busy-who can pass up good food. And if everything is okay we can do some window shopping too."

"If we are going to go I think that we should go now. Things are a little weird around here and I don't think that I want to stand around and try to figure out what is going on. We should really go into the city and find out there."

I then walked to my car and grabbed my jacket from it and then pulled out a coat that I was going to surprise Melissa with as she had told me that she wanted it and gave it to her with a smile.

"Happy New Year Melissa," I said.

David:

As we headed back into town,I threw my arm around Jills Shoulder."What a way to celebrate our engagement, huh," I whispered in her ear.I felt so wrong,no wind blowing no cars moving,no people. What the hell happened I saked myself...

Rick

As we walked after David and Jill I saw how scared Melissa was and moved closer to her. I turned to her and said, "I wonder why nothing has happened to us."

Jill

I snuggled closer to Dave. It made me feel a little bit better. "I've heard about the world stopping on these occasions but this is ridiculous!"
