The now fully official Author’s Hangout Halloween 2025 competition support thread

Sorry, everyone, another noob question. But I can't where the parameters are set for the contest, just the theme. Is there a word limit? Or something I really need to adhere to or pay attention to? I'm not too familiar with the forum side of lit and get easily lost here.

Lit's usual rules: a minimum of 750 words, a handful of content and formatting rules, and some form of connection to the theme. As long as the readers buy into the idea that it's Halloween-related you'll be fine.

No word limit, just has to be over 750, the usual minimum. The theme is fairly loose and can be in any category. Good luck.

I know I’m repeating what @StillStunned and @Trionyx have said, but in my semi-official (aka officious) capacity, the same restrictions on length as any other Lit story: must be at least 750 words, no known upper limit.

On theme, it can be pretty tangential. A ghost story set in a different month 👍. A non-supernatural story set on Oct 31st 👍. A vaguely creepy story with no actual supernatural elements 👍. Succubus 👍. Witch 👍. College kids dressing up for Halloween 👍. A she-demon and angel lesbian couple being sent back to 1995 to locate / rescue a young girl 👍👍👍.

My story checked in at 751, despite trying to be only 750 lol

Thank you so much for your response!

So, for example, a possession that takes place over the course of October culminating on the 31st?

That'd work as long as you work in a relationship to Halloween - given it's All Hallows Eve a possession would fit perfectly

Come see me in February, we have a 750 word event where your story is limited to 750 words, no more, no less. It's aggravating at first, but once you get the hang of it it's a lot of fun. Right EM?

Some people seem to think so 😇
