I take a biological view of emotions. The 'root' of all emotion and sensation is pain and pleasure, or, if you want to get basic, pain and the lack of pain.

Very basically, I believe you cannot have Hate w/o Love.
There is such a passion to both emotions, that you almost cannot have Hate w/o having loved first.

Again, based on my simple biological knowledge, you can have hate without love. Hate is a form of anger, or rather anger a watered down version of hate.
If the conditions are just right, a human can survive in such a harsh climate that they are never able to develop 'love'. I don't remember the name of the tribe but they lived in South America, I believe. Five year olds would pry their grandparents' weak jaws open to steal the food. If a mother's infant was taken by a leopard the tribe (and the mother) was happy because that meant they could kill the leopard and eat.
Obviously, the tribe died off. I wish I could remember more..

Also there are cases of child abuse where the child was kept in almost complete isolation for 'its' formative years. Under those circumstances the part of the brain that controls 'love' became 'malformed' (along with many other brain function). Anger and hate were still possible.
