Alex watched the teenagers crowding out and scowled moving past them with his hood up to block his face. He tried to keep his disdain for all of them off of his face. He hated each and every one of them the so-called school “royalty”. Most people thought the whole clique thing was in the past but Alex was a victim of all of them. He was the loner and the geek not quite fitting in with any one he was around. Even the fellow nerds around the school were not right for him. Alex knew he didn’t need any one he had his books and that was enough for him.

It still saddened him some time

He saw every one crowding the parking lot and quickly stopped knowing some one would tease and pick on him if he went out there. Instead he turned the corner and walked to the double doors gently shouldering them open and walking out into the cold streets. He ignored the parking lot and instead went over to the back area where people smoked and fucked and stuff.

He quickly found a nice quite half wall and sat on it. His nimble fingers pushed his thick glasses up. They hid some of his face but didn’t hide his strong handsome chin or his electric green eyes. He had on baggy clothes that looked like they were bought at a thrift store and hid his nimble muscular body. The truth was that Alex was actually handsome he just hid it behind thick glasses and baggy clothing.

He fished out one of his novels and cracked it open. He began reading quickly getting lost in the fantastic world instead of the boring one he was in now.

Madeline Carter, known to those close to her as Maddy, waited for Brian at the end of the street. He was late...again. It didn't matter, he had what she wanted and she was willing to wait for him.

Damn, it was cold today and she had made the mistake of wearing a skirt and knee high boots, both black with a red top. Her thick winter coat was also black.

Although she could have been mistaken for something other than a high school senior the way she stood on the street corner, waiting...

She was glancing around, seeing who else was about in this cold weather.

As she was looking, she noticed something out of the corner of her eye... someone was hiding in the one gaps of the building, nose buried in a book. She walked over to see who it was and noticed that the stranger hadn't realized she was standing there, watching him.

"Hey." She said, nudging his foot with hers, "Hey...don't I know you from somewhere?" She asked.

“Probably not” Alex said not bothering to take his eyes off the book. If she did know him then she probably had teased him or some thing before. Alex wasn’t in the mood to be bullied right now so he kept his nose firmly planted in the book not even bothering to look up to see who was talking to him.

If he did he might have run

“I’m not some one well known around the school” Alex said carefully turning a page and feeling himself growing more nervous. Why hadn’t she left? Was she going to do some thing to him? Alex knew most girls weren’t the swirly giving kind but he had still had his fair share of hurtful words from girls.

“Am I in the way or some thing?” Alex asked hurriedly “do you need me to move?”

"No...you're not in the way..." Maddy repeated, not bothering to hide a smirk. She wasn't used to being ignored when talking to someone, she was used to being the center of attention.

Maddy wasn't going to not be ignore so she grabbed the book from the guy and turned from him as she closed it and looked at the cover. It showed some space scene with aliens and ships in some sort of war and that made Maddy laugh, "Oh my God, don't tell me you're really reading this sort of shit.." she said, dodging his attempts to grab it back.

“Why do you fucking care what I am reading!” Alex hissed glaring at her in anger as he tried to get the book back. Of course even the fucking girl was bullying him around! It was just his luck. He tried to stay out of every ones way and their radar and never did any thing to rock the boat. Yet trouble still always found him it was ridiculous in a way border lining on comical for some.

Yet he hated it

“Just give me my damn book back and leave me alone” Alex said glaring at the hot girl and trying to keep his cool “I don’t want any trouble and I just want ot be left alone so can I please have my book back and then I will leave”

"Uh huh..." Maddy said as she flipped through the book, her back still turned from the guy, "Calm down...sheesh.." she turned and literally slammed the book into his chest, shaking her head, "I was just curious...and, you don't have to leave... God, paranoid much?" She asked with a chuckle as she watched him take the book and glare at her.

It was then she recognized him...he went to the same school as she did... in fact, wasn't he in some of her classes? "Hey... you go to the same school as I do, right?"

“Sure” Alex said surprised she even recognized him. Most didn’t except for the ones who tormented him and they only knew him because they liked messing with him. He knew Maddy form his classes but she had never done any thing to him until now. She was a wild child though with a bit of an attitude and he was surprised he hadn’t messed with him before.

“We have English and math together” Alex said frowning slightly as he tucked the book back into his backpack “Your Maddy or well Madeline Carter” He said trying to resist the urge to blush at his common use of her nickname.

“What are you waiting for?” He asked trying to make small talk and also genuinely curious

It wasn't really in Maddy's nature to be so much of a bully...especially to the guys. Not to say that she didn't push them around either.

At least some of them. Most were too busy falling over themselves to talk to her.

But not this guy. Yeah, she had seen him in class before but she never talked to him on the account that she didn't need anything of him. He didn't have much to give her except maybe helping her on her homework, but she had others to help her with that.

When he asked what she was waiting for, Maddy shrugged and took a seat on the small steps that led to a backdoor, "Waiting on Mark to get his ass here with some feel good meds..if you know what I mean. He's an hour late so I'm sure he's backed off...or maybe ran out.."

Looking up at him, Maddy shoved her hands in her pockets, hoping to keep them warm, "What about you? Why are you reading here and not at home or the library?"

“I was uh” Alex said looking at the thinning crowds and debating about telling her the truth. He knew it sounded lame out loud which was why he probably shouldn’t tell her that he was waiting for some of the more bullying kids to leave so he could get home safe. Once again the sadness in his life came back to him and he resisted the urge to give a weary sigh.

“I don’t do crowds well” He finally said gesturing at the parking lot and frowning “So I usually go sit some where until enough people have gone then I head to my car” He said shrugging and looking at her again.

“Feel good meds?” Alex asked raising an eye brow before he figured it out “oh” he said his eyes going wide slightly as he fiddled with his back pack “If I scared him off I am sorry” Alex said even though he didn’t really know why he was apologizing. I mean the chances that he had scared some dude off was minor at best but maybe he didn’t know why he was around so he bailed.

Or maybe Alex was just being dumb

“Maybe I should go” Alex said edging back to the staircase “that way he might still come” he said acting like an idiot.

Maddy watched him as he talked and just nodded. She was partly listening to him and partly looking at him...studying him. He was sort of cute, in a nerdy way. And tall...

"that way he might still come"

"Oh, hell, don't worry about it." She pushed herself up and stood up on the 2nd step, still not quite eye level with him. "He probably had some where else to be or just forgot.. I'll catch him later, I'm sure.. it's just for a party I'm having on Friday night... a few people coming over.." she had no idea why she was telling him this, "I know you said you don't do well in crowds, but you can come over if you want..."

She was inviting him to a party?

Alex blinked looking at her in confusion. Not once in his four years of being a high school student had he ever been invited to a party. He wasn’t popular by any means but even the normal parties that people just sort of went to seem barred from him. Of course he never tried to go to one either so maybe it was his fault as well.

“You really want me to come to your party” Alex asked unable to help himself he raised one eye brow and folded his arms over his chest looking surprisingly sexy even in his baggy clothes “You do know who I am right? I wouldn’t want you to be made fun of for having the high school punching bag at your event” he said shrugging.
