Tom dismounted his bike and rolled it to the curb. He searched his bag for the key to the room. It was nice to get away from everything and everyone. Tom was certain that no one knew where he was. The day was scorching. The sun high in the sky baking the pavement. He could see waves of heat articulate up from the pavement of the parking lot. His grey shirt clung to his sweaty body. He felt the wind burn on his face. He opened the door and rolled his bike inside.

Tom took off his shirt shorts and underwear and threw them in the sink. He looked at his self in the mirror. The thoughts of what he had almost pulled off came flooding back to him. Pain and suffering at this point was his only ally. He was determined to shake it off , regroup and try to re enter his life, but that seemed so far away.

Tom turned on the shower and stepped inside. The hot water felt good on his sore body. He let the water cascade on his face feeling the small pelts massage the wind burn. Tom looked at his arm and saw the tenderness of the fresh wound. It was starting to heal. No doubt it would scar and be a constant reminder.

His thoughts flashed to Allison. Her hair, her eyes a image burned deep into his memories. She looked like an angel. In the haze of it she ended up being his angel. When she disappeared ,Tom gave up life as he knew it. He knew in the back of his head he couldn’t run forever. He was going to have to face his past and especially the reasons.

Tom stepped from the shower and grabbed one of the towels neatly folded on a shelf. It felt like sandpaper on his body. Tom walked to the large window next to the door and opened the shade. The parking lot was bare. It was the middle of the week and no one would show up until the weekend. He grabbed his bag and headed for the small sink area. The air conditioned room rose goose bumps on his damp skin.

Deep within his bag he could hear the vibration of his cell phone. Tom pawed through his belongings and flipped it around in his hand. The numbers on the screen were an enigma, a ghost, a reminder. Tom slowly opened the phone.

“Hello.”
Tom listened to the voice on the other end. His blood ran hot, his veins expanded, and his hands started to shake.
“Allison, is that you?”
