Hal loved singing karaoke and was a local hit at the neighborhood bar. While he knew that there was zero chance for him to be noticed that way, he could live with that fact. He'd made his peace with obscurity. He had some fame as a popular singer at Hannigan's and it got his mind off painful things like his recent divorce.

Of course, his popularity with the female patrons also had something to do with causing his divorce, but that was because his wife was a hypocrite. She stupidly thought him ignorant of her own affairs until the very moment his lawyers presented the evidence of her infidelity and basically confronted her with it. He laughed as he remembered that part of the settlement which saved him a ton of money when her lawyers convinced her to cave. He had wisely saved up that evidence for whenever he'd need it to save his own ass and it worked.

Anyway, enough thoughts of that witch and back to his singing. They were his main release, though lately he'd turned more to country music. It seemed to fit his life these days, especially the leavin' songs. They were also a hit with the ladies, who might have seen as less of a sad poet if they knew all of the facts.

Speaking of women, who was that cute, plump woman about ten years his junior sitting at the table right behind the pool table? He had a little cash on hand this week, so he decided to buy her a drink and see how she reacted to it before he started his song.

Returning to his country roots had its definite advantages, but he wasn't sure about the bourbon and Coke. It was a risk, but he wanted to see what the girl was made of. Was she an "umbrella drink only" girl or something else? If she didn't want the drink, he'd down it himself. No loss there.

"Hey, Jen. Get that girl there a bourbon and Coke on me," he told his favorite waitress, who flirted with him on the understanding that nothing would ever happen between them for real.
