High school seniors, college students, or community theater.
A mismatched pair are cast as lovers in the play and required to practice their stage kiss repeatedly.

Do they become lovers?
Or is the story the jealousy of one or both of their significant others?
Does it lead to disaster or HEA?
is it same sex?
Are they , unknown to the director and rest of the cast, secretly cousins?

The way I've seen the story told, they have no chemistry at all. The kisses look like what they are: dutiful, not from attraction.

One of them realizes this will make Romeo and Juliet a terrible performance to watch, with R&J disinterested in each other. He/she has to somehow generate real heat with their partner. It becomes a tale of not just seduction, but in a sense self-seduction, as she/he has to sincerely feel something about the other for their Method acting to work.

Since I love plot twists: only after the romantic seduction has succeeded does the actively seductive person realize their partner is married, and they just unknowingly seduced someone into adultery, which they find horribly immoral.

if you REALLY want it twisted, they just unknowingly seduced someone into adultery, which they know that they should find horribly immoral, but can't resist it anyhow.

I remember when I did theater everyone was fucking in the backstage while the plays went on while the couple kissing rarely got together, lol.

Let’s see:

I think a few ways to add some more flavor to it:

MF kiss: guy got the part for his performance but he actually has little experience with women. On top of that…this isn’t a romantic kiss…it’s an assault. He’s the villain in the play. Now the assault is just a kiss and then he pulls the shoulder of her dress down before tossing her to the ground. The hero then shows up, he gets killed, day is saved…but it still really makes guy uncomfortable but it’s also a big part for him.

So costar sees his discomfort and meets up with him to practice. For her, it’s an interesting experience: she is the one playing the victim but it’s play and she’s guiding the guys playing her assailant.

At first it’s just getting him comfortable with kissing her and handling her roughly but it soon leads to a spot of vulnerability as he admits his inexperience and growing attraction to her while she admits the sexual pleasure she gets from her fantasy.

Ultimately they do have sex (first simulating the scene then having a more vanilla encounter) and while director is unaware she does compliment them on their chemistry

Other twists:

Director fills in and actor or actress takes advantage of the chance to get their hands on them

Former star is doing time on the community theater scene as a way to help their community. They don’t know but people are paying the director to do a lot more kissing scenes with them

Tired of being called a bad actress, porn Star takes the role in a play and the problem is that she’s such a good kisser her partner is left speechless. Ultimately she makes them practice with her and fuck her until a mere kiss doesn’t make them breathless

I love this scenario as a "slippery slope" for a well-behaved woman to find herself in an increasingly tempting/sexual situation... but all "innocently" for the show.

Ive played with the "big star comes to a small vacation town and agrees to direct/star in the community theater production"... and a woman is cast as his costar... and the husband has to watch as the kisses go from awkward to very natural and passionate.

Maybe he's in the play too, so is standing right there? Maybe he's in the audience watching along with the rest of the town?

The actor/director, enjoying the situation, makes some directorial changes to the play... adding some more kissing scenes, and eventually a sex scene.

She's the more serious actor than he is, and she wants it to come off hot. So, out of sight of the audience, she uses her hidden upstage hand to pinch his nipple as their lips come together.

That's during rehearsal. On performance night, she palms his crotch.

Now he's serious about it. And the afterparty rocks!

Emily is the big star of the show, lead actress playing Maria.

Show goes well for the first few nights, but then the lead actor gets sick and can't make the last show. Understudy doesn't show either.

The only one who really knows the lines and the song is Em's brother. And, well, somebody's gotta' be Tony for the big balcony scene.
