:: Dallas Texas ::
Grant Collins stood on the balcony of his 3rd floor apartment in the middle of downtown Dallas, staring out onto the bodies and corpses that littered the streets of this once grand city! It was late august and the sun had baked most of the corpses into something that looked roughly familiar with the creatures of a science fiction horror movie. Grey, wrinkled, thin, rotten... the smell was atrocious...
He turned back into his apartment, closing the balcony door behind him and went to the TV and tried to turn it on... of course the power had been out since the superflu had wiped out the entire population 3 weeks prior and so all he had now to use for energy was propane tanks that he had taken from the local camping supply store, a portable cooker, and a few lanterns.
Grant realized that the time had come... he walked to the pantry, opening it to find very few canned goods left. He knew he wouldn't be able to stay there any longer... but what scared him more than anything... was what would he find out there? He had seen no one out there... no one at all...
He didn't know what to do... but he knew that if he stayed there... he would most likely die. He walked to the table, picked up his oversized backpack... then began to pack it with the essentials. Canned goods, bottled water, propane and a stove, a knife, his pistol, some toiletries, and other basics.
He slung his pack onto his back, then headed to the door and picked up the M-16 that he had picked up from the gun shop down the street and tossed some ammo into his pack. He opened the door, glanced back to his apartment... for a moment thinking about his wife and 3 kids that he had lost to the superflu...
A tear rolled down his eye as he turned and left his safety zone. He walked along the street... trying carefully to avoid the corpses... He had been having these thoughts about heading to Nebraska for some reason... So Nebraska he would go...
It had been nearly 7 hours since he started his walk. He realized the closer he got out of town, the more in need he would have of a car...
and he was so busy in thought that he never heard the car racing up behind him.... clipping his leg and sending him crashing into the concrete!!!
