The Turkey- Syria thread

I've read that you're not on Twitter and I'm pretty sure you weren't alive during the Spanish-American war so please forgive this giant grain of salt.

Not at all relevant, no forgiveness needed.

So, press is bad, Twitter is worse, what about Putin?

Kinda a dick, wouldn't trust him with a dish rag... but whatever.....

Why do you ask??

I already know that you want the US to do Putin’s bidding, so I’m not asking you.

I'm very well versed in history. I'm also aware of the role that the press has had in making history (not to be confused with reporting). There is a book out there on the early history of the press in the US, "Infamous Scribblers." Try educating yourself.

Using Twitter as a news source is as useful as using an anvil for a parachute.

The Syrian army will be helping the Kurds to defend their border against Turkey. Let’s hear it for Assad.

Putin's press says, Americans interfering with Syria's army movement north.

EDIT: forgot point ru is censored here. Anyway, it's in Russian, so needs translate, perhaps. And it doesn't say much more, just that naked claim.

You speak Russian.
Was it obligatory, or a choice among other foreign languages during the Soviet era?

Probably because I didn't deal directly with the imperialistic part, I find them to be such a fascinating contradiction:
The boots in your face, unsophisticated dictatorial part of their leaders & followers
versus one of the richest cultures in the world.

Actually we probably are based on the current positioning of our troops.

However there is an unstated situation here. Syria is moving North, Turkey moving South. Syria can't be happy about Turkey taking a 30Km swath of their sovereign territory.

Typically b boy response. He follows dt's lead when questioned....ignore the question and counter with vulgarity and an attempted put down.

I wasn't questioned, it was a response to Phro making shit up about me.

The put down wasn't an attempt....it was a consequence for making shit up.

Learn to read.

You speak Russian.
Was it obligatory, or a choice among other foreign languages during the Soviet era?

In USSR (until 1991 for me) Russian was obligatory since first grade, and you had to choose another obligatory foreigner language in middle school (my choice was German back then, but I do not list it as skill of any level currently), and secondary foreign language was available as voluntary elective. So, for us it was three to four language classes from the middle school up, plus Literature as separate class (although tightly tied with native language class). Russian was a pain for me in school, and I dropped it as soon it was possible. I read and speak freely, but avoid writing in Russian if at all possible.

However in the late Soviet era I experienced, russification wasn't as rampant as it had been in late nineteenth - early twentieth century (when a farmer would speak Latvian at home, deal serfdom levies with German speaking landlord, fill taxes with Russian state administration, and his own hired workers oftentimes where Lithuanians or Poles, and traveling salesmen Jewish or Gypsy). Unlike back then It was allowed to speak Latvian in public and all levels of education were available in Latvian, at least nominally. However, nearly all official and business documentation, standards, manuals and specifications were in Russian, with no requirement to provide native translation.

Russian is still unavoidable here, although we very much switched to English for the top level business language almost overnight. Due to massive immigration during Soviet era, Russian is first language for nearly 40% of residents of Riga. It's next to impossible to get any job without at least basic knowledge of Latvian, Russian and English, and frankly, Latvian is often the least mandatory of those three.

Probably because I didn't deal directly with the imperialistic part, I find them to be such a fascinating contradiction:

It is interesting.

Now forgive me rather severe generalization and mischaracterization.

There are at very least three very distinct characters you have to know dealing with a native Russian, oftentimes layered in the same individual albeit in different proportions, or levels of pronouncement. Topmost is the intellectual and cultural heritage bearer, sophisticated, philosophic, introspective and often self-loathing and/or self-deprecating, and even in the most honest of cases it may feel incredibly fake. Then there's the ham asshole goon, purposefully primitive and aggresive without provocation, with quite twisted morals and no ethics to speak about. While always present to same level in every real Russian it's almost all there's left in a pure-breed Soviet (not to be mistaken for Russian, although they do that themselves). Finally there's the wholesome peasant with open heart, huge soul and unshakable optimism. And if you manage to dig it or encounter by chance, you likely win a friend for life. The first two hate each other by default and both loathe the third as a fool. However, all three are interdependent and probably even cannot exist in pure form. Yes, it sounds like severe schizo case, it is, and it carry through for group behavior and bear true up to the state level.

The video of a "Turkish attack" that was aired on the ABC network news yesterday is actually footage from a night shoot at a Kentucky gun range. OOps.

ABC has taken down the video, saying it was a mistake, but people will still believe what they want to believe.

You mean the leftist news media is publishing fake news to generate sympathy for their anti-American socialist comrades in Syria?

No way!

Bet no lefties have any issue with it and will continue to pretend there is no fake news because orange man bad!

Wow, caught between two boots, Germany and Russia.

It also seems to me that NE countries were much more under the grip of Russia before and after ww2 than the Central/SE ones. Probably because for the rest of the countries, historically the Ottoman Empire outcompeted Russia's influence.

Now forgive me rather severe generalization and mischaracterization.

Yes.
It's even more striking with Russia, you can tell the differences off the bat. Whereas imo Westerners at a superficial glance seem more uniform.

The epitome of fake news. They knew it was fake and used it anyway hoping they wouldn't get caught.
I saw on the news once, they said that they were showing footage of a Gulf War sea battle, and the video was of a high school swim meet.

Shit happens.
