Enlisted in the French Foreign Legion towards the end of WWI.

Although married for 34 years, he had many gay affairs.

In 2003, a clandestine meth-amphetamine lab was discovered - and destroyed - in the house where he was born.

I think, HRM, we need another clue.

And where are Tabea and missy-me?

He learned the violin at 6 and the piano at 8.
He went to Yale, then to Harvard Law School.
But he never became a lawyer.

Did you say Cole Porter?

I mean, "the" Cole Porter?

The one we owe, among many others, Night and Day, I Get a Kick Out of You, You're The Top, I've Got You Under My Skin, I Love Paris, C'est Magnifique... ?

The one that was born in Peru*?

Well, I have to say....

We have a winner here.

Congrats, Tabea :rose:

------------
* That's Peru, Indiana. Not Peru, well, Peru in Peru.

I've only seen "Kiss me, Kate" by him and don't know his other musicals. Am I missing out on much?

Time for a woman:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh4/Tabea_photo/112.jpg

She was a very successful author and wrote a huge amount of books.
She was a teacher.

Sorry for not posting again earlier, my internet broke down.

She had two daughters, one of them helped with a very critical biography of her.
Some of her books have been made into cartoons.

I can't tell, since I haven't seen any of his musicals. But when it comes to his songs... so many are now jazz standards... Night and Day, I've got you under my skin, What is this thing called love?, Every time we fall in love, etc... (click here for a tribute by Manu Leprince)

PS: When your current riddle will be solved, I'll slap my forehead in wonder... I'm sure I know who she is...

Thanks for the link.

I would be surprised, if you didn't know her. It might have been quite some time since you read her, though.

I'll say Beatrix Potter, running on the same lines as rinka's presumably using, but I don't think she actually had any children.

Enid Blyton?

Yes! Correct. :rose:

When I researched her I was surprised to learn that her daughter and a biographer portrayed her as being cold to children. The biographer assumed her emotional development had been arrested when she was 13.

She wrote more than 700 books. Which ones did you read?

I despised the famous five books as a kid but loved getting the Brer Rabit books read to me as a youngster.

Oh, wow! I have no idea what made me think of her. I never really read her much, a few of the five books, but they were not my favorites. My brother read lots of them, though.

So, I'll have to think of someone now.
Hmmm... I will be back :)
