Self flaggelation is Judaic, Christian, Muslem, Buddhist, Hindu... I don't remember it being a feature of Taoism (Chinese), but I could easily be wrong.

The Hindu's REALLY get into it, including self piercing, sleeping on beds of nails, that sort of thing. Christians and Judaists tend to go more for the "hair shirt" approach.

Er... he seriously needs to re-think his religious stance if he doubts there is any erotic charge involved. Remember that due to medieval morality, the church was often the refuge for homosexuals. Who is to say that it wasn't there for the masochists as well?

Also, just because "Bauemeister" (whoever he is) says something doesn't make it true. I suspect it's more a matter that we haven't recognised it. God, with all the rape, pillage and murder going on... I'm positive people must have been screwed up beyond all belief! So as much as I know it's hard to prove a negative, I would stand firm in my belief that masochism is a long-standing part of human nature.

I wonder if it's present in primate behaivour? Anyone know?
