Things Happen (closed for Beachbum25)

He watched closely as she removed the IV needle from his arm. She did it carefully and he took the tissue to hold against the entry point to stop the bleeding. She was taking care of him and that helped to strengthen the trust he had for her.

"I am not very hungry, but I am thirsty. Get me anything. whatever you are having will be fine with me. Just please get me a big drink."

In no time, the food had been delivered, a pizza, plain and two large drinks. Tory nudged Billy awake, telling him the food was here. She handed him his drink and watched as he took several long drinks.

"It's only iced tea since you don't...well, you don't like soda.." she said as she presented him with a slice of pizza on a napkin, "So, here's what I've come up with, we'll rest here tonight and first thing in the morning we'll head out. I figure it's safer to travel in the day rather than at night...I'm estimating at least another 12 hours of driving and we'll be there."

She took a bite of her pizza and was lost in thought..

"Victoria, I can help with the driving. I know I have lost my memory, but I am pretty damned sure I can drive. You are going to wear yourself out if you do all of the driving." Billy looked at her for a reaction.

Billy wanted to help. He wasn't sure why, but something told him that he was not the kind of person that just sat back and let things happen. Something told him that he was the type of person who went after whatever he wanted, and judging by the fact that Victoria was his wife, he felt he almost always got what he wanted.

With a soft smile, Tory nodded, "I know you can drive honey but..." she stopped, stifling a yawn. "We'll see, OK? I just want you to rest..you've been through so much.."

Besides, I promised to take care of you...

Of course, that was what she was telling herself.

Deep down, Tory could only hear Billy yelling at her one time when they were fighting hard that he wanted a divorce...he had met someone else...

Damnit, how she hated that. They had both been fooling around on the side, jeopardizing everything the government had worked for to keep them safe. It seemed to Tory that's what kept them together, the conflict...Billy's jealousy...

It was all too complicated and what Tory needed to do right now was rest...things would come to light once they reached NY...

Billy watched her. He could see her thinking. He could tell there was something she wasn't telling him. There was something that she was hiding. He was able to read that in the way she looked at him... or better yet, didn't look at him. She was avoiding eye contact.

Her body language told him there was deception. He didn't know how... or why. He just knew it was there. There was something coming back to him.... not his memory per se... but an ability.. or a training that he had that enabled him to read people.

Later, her mind still running on high, Tory was laying next to Billy in bed, their first real physical touching since all this had happened. She had an arm around him and felt him finally sleeping.

It wasn't long till she finally found some sleep herself...

*****

The next morning, Tory awoke and tried to get her bearings together... she grabbed her phone and looked at the time and muttered a curse under her breath, damnit, they needed to leave now...

Slowly she woke up Billy, and made sure her tone and attitude didn't show anything, "Billy...come on love, wake up, we need to get going."

Billy jumped up out of bed. He had been dead to the world. It was a deep sleep he hadn't been able to get since he woke up in the hospital room. After the initial shock of being awakened from the deep sleep, he felt refreshed and ready to go.

"Victoria, I insist on doing my share of the driving. It is non-negotiable." He looked at Victoria with a look that said he was serious. The rest had given him some confidence. He still had no clue what was going on, but he had a feeling that he could do anything he put his mind to.

As much as Tory wanted to argue, she saw the old Billy shine through since the shooting. With a soft sigh, Tory nodded, "OK, let me just get us out of town and once we get to the freeway, then you can take over...deal?"

With that she turned on her heel and looked around. She had wiped everything down and was just waiting for Billy to finish dressing so she could clean up behind him. "I guess we can grab some breakfast on the way out of town..I need my coffee," she told him.

"I will get us out of town. I will pull over, you can run in and get breakfast, and I will wait for you. I will be fine. I got plenty of rest last night. You did all of the driving yesterday. I am starting today."

He wasn't sure why but he was feeling incredibly strong. He needed to be in control. He had to be careful though, because he was not sure that he had the strength he needed to exert the control. He was confused with what he was feeling mentally and what he was feeling physically.

"OK, OK...I get it.." Tory said as she tossed the keys at Billy, "I've loaded our route into the GPS so we can just follow that. As for breakfast, just whatever is on the way out will do..at least for me."

She closed up the room and headed toward the SUV. Tory crawled into the passenger side and as Billy also climbed in, "Hey.." she said to him, her voice quiet, "Take it easy, OK?"

"I am taking it easy. Relax. If you see a place that you want to stop, just let me know." H eput the car into gear and headed out onto the road. He followed the route provided by the GPS and headed out of town. He saw a coffee place and decided to pull in. Victoria hadn't said anything, but he wanted coffee.

When Victoria came back out and got into the car with the coffee, he headed out of town and found the interstate. He got on and got the vehicle up to speed. He set the cruise control and off they went. The rode in silence..... He was trying to remember who he was and what he did.

Tory made him his coffee just the way he used to like it. It got her curious, would he still like it like that? Would he remember how he liked it?

She shook her thoughts away and as she walked out, she swore she recognized someone in the coffee crowd...were they being followed? Was her imagination running away with her?

Tory didn't dare let Billy know what she thought. If she was right, she could tell he had some sort of memory returning.

As they were on their way, the ride was silent for a good while, before Tory spoke up, "So, tell me, anything coming back?" She asked as she took a sip of her coffee...

He took the coffee from Victoria and sipped it as they cruised along the interstate. His memory wasn't coming back, but he had these feelings.... these emotions... this sense of inner strength.

When Victoria asked if anything ws coming back, he responded, "It is really weird. I have these feelings that I can't describe, but I think they are the feelings of the real me. When I first woke up, I felt weak... not just physically, but mentally. I don't feel tht way now. I feel I am getting my physical strength back, as well as my mental strength. Now I just wish I knew where to apply it."

Oh shit... Tory thought as she nodded and sipped her coffee.

"I'm sure it's nothing..." she told him in an empty tone. She looked out the window, watching the passing scenary. The leaves where changing in the signs of fall, it was her favorite time of year. Tory had planned this route with the idea of them staying off the main road and away from obivious sight.

"I'm glad you're feeling better.."

"well, I certainly couldn't be feeling any worse than when I woke up. I can't wait until I get my memory back. I want to know everything that has escaped me, and I want to know who the motherfucker is that did this to me. He/she is going to be one sorry motherfucker. They aren't going to just suffer... they are going to suffer miserably."

He drank his coffee as he drove down the road. The feelings of wanting revenge were boiling up in him. He was going to find the person who did this and they were going to pay.

After an hour of silence, Tory cleared her throat, "Hey Billy..." she said, remembering to tread carefully, "What if I said I knew who might have done this...?"

She turned to look at him, she could feel the anger emitting off him, "We're going to NY for help Billy. I can't do this alone and..." she stopped but refused to finish...

"And what Victoria... finish. Tell me who did this. Tell me." Billy pulled the car to the side of the road. He put the car in park and turned and faced Victoria. "If you know something, you must tell me. I need to know. Torturing and killing that motherfucker may help bring my memory back."

He stared at her. He was incredibly angry and his eyes were bugging out of his head. "You don't think I can help myself, do you? You think I need help handling my problems... right? The only thing I need help with is my memory...if I get that back I will handle everything that needs handled."

"OK! Wait..." Tory said, her voice level matching his, "Wait Billy... I didn't say that OK? I know you can take care of yourself..."

"Baby, it's more complex than that, alright? Listen, let's get to NY first and then..." she could feel the anger from him and tried her best to control it.

That was the reason Tory didn't dare leave his side because of this. It wasn't because of her love for him, it was because she was the only one that could control his anger. Well, not really control it but more like, not let it affect others around them from getting angry themselves...

"And then what Victoria? Finish a damned sentence once... please." He was geting frustrated...... maybe even angry, but it was more the frustration of not being able to figure anything out because of the memory loss.

"I am sorry I yelled at you. I am just frustrated with not being able to figure out what the hell is going on. What are we going to find in New York that is going to help me?" He looked at her, then turned, put the car back in drive and pulled out onto the road.

He still wasn't sure whether he could fully trust her. The fact that he only gave her partial information led him to doubt her... justified or not. She was, however, th eonly person he had right now, so he had to afford her some level of trust.
