This kinda amused me

I saw a lot of confusion, projection from the interviewer, and talking over each other. I'd like to see a do over. I think Ben would destroy this interviewer.

L.O.L.

Political interviews in the UK aren't the softball fluff fests that they are in America. Andrew Neil isn't even close to being the toughrst. Paxman or John Humphries make Andy look like a puddy cat.

The interviewer was doing what we'd consider his job. Asking difficult questions, demanding explanation and clarification. He talks over the person trying to avoid answering, because the person is there to answer his questions not give speeches. Regardless of whether he personally agrees or not, it is his job to expose any cracks to the public for their judgement.

The aim is not to destroy an interviewer, it's to have clear and competent replies to all his questions. Keep your cool, know your topic, and you come away looking good. Flip your lid, evade, avoid, and you'll look like a tit.

I see this as possibly one of the big UK/US differences. This is how we like to see politicians and political pundits interviewed. If they just want a platform, they should look elsewhere.

I did think of paxman when I saw this. He was brutal. Neil was being pretty soft in comparison.

We like to see blood.

I've seen him take people apart in a standard debate forum. I'd like to see that again under those conditions.

Shapiro. He's what passes for an intellectual on the American right. In reality he's a blowhard that gish gallops his way through "debates".

There was a piece in yesterday's Indy, I'll see if I can find it.

Then again, the bar is pretty low for the right wingers.

Shapiro was taken aback because Neil was the first 90 year old white guy who didn't agree with him.

Shapiro realized after the fact that he done fucked up majorly and even conservatives were laughing at him. Commence Damage Control!

Ben Shapiro and Laura Ingraham and Tomi Lahren are the most sensitive snowflakes on the right.

The thing is, Neil is a right winger. He's the editor of The Spectator, ffs. Shapiro calling him a lefty is just hilarious.

I did giggle at that too. Neil couldn't keep a straight face.

The lesson to be taken from that is to always prepare for interviews and research. Sacha baron Cohen gets people to make tits of themselves because people don't bother doing research. An hour of your time to avoid years of blushes.

Must be a drag seeing the world in only black and white. :)

Follow up saying pretty much the same thing as well as some of Neill's quips:

Shapiro asked Neil -- who once was a researcher for Britain's Conservative Party and now chairs the group that operates conservative magazine The Spectator -- why he would not "just say that you're on the left."

"Mr. Shapiro, if you only knew how ridiculous that statement is, you wouldn't have said it," Neil replied.

Yes. I tend to take the opposite position from those I interview. It's a useful way to test their positions. It tells you nothing of my own views. What do American interviewers do? https:/*******UnAT2MFoxE

Dog whistle alert.

Since you missed it:

.@afneil DESTROYS Ben Shapiro! So that's what that feels like ;)
Broke my own rule, and wasn't properly prepared. I've addressed every single issue he raised before; see below. Still, it's Neil 1, Shapiro 0. https:/*******UAtAUtIWtO

I'm guessing Shapiro is one of those self-hating jews, right?

Are you one of those Jew hating selfs? :)

Whatever else Shapiro is, he's big enough to admit when he's fucked up.

I don't go out of my way to listen to him. He sounds like a 12 year old fast-talker. But like most GB lefterners, a person can do million things right and one mistake earns them a trip to the ovens. Amirite? :)

There are youtube videos breaking down and fawning over his communication/debate techniques and tricks.

ETA: LOL, which didn’t work or even make a blip. Neil’s a pro.

I was watching Politics Live and the panel, which ran the gamut from the left of Labour to the right of the Tories, all dunked on Shapiro. I particularly liked Trevor Phillips' "his intellectual carapace is so thin" comment.

I am shocked that once again you watched someone you agreed with totally winning at debate. It truly is miraculous the how often you back the right horse in every single debate on every subject on the planet.
