Perhaps one-on-one isn't right for you and your wife, but there's nothing wrong with other people doing it if that's what they're into. We all have different interests and rules; as long as all of the members of the group are okay with those, whatever they do is great. Yes, it is American, and it comes from "That('s) a boy," which was perhaps "That's a good boy" originally (though we say that, too). Typically we further mangle it with the spelling "atta boy."

Do Brits say something similar to "That's a boy"? I think I've heard a friend use it, but I can't recall.
