Gandalf was of the opinion that no one, including himself, could resist the Ring forever.

Maybe not forever, but certainly for a long time. Months, even years. Aragorn had no desire to wrest it away even though it was "his," and the other hobbits showed no interest in it either. Nor did anyone else in the Fellowship except Boromir, and even he returned to sanity as soon as the Ring was removed from his presence.

Faramir had a sense of honor that strengthened his will. Remember, in the book after he realizes he could take the Ring away, he repeats that he would not take it, but he adds that part of the reason why he'd leave it is because he'd said he'd leave it; his own words he takes as an oath. So, having said he'd reject it, he now must. I don't see a reason why that dynamic would have changed anytime soon.
