There is definitely an issue with both doctors and patients expecting a pill to be the answer to everything. I had a doctor who wasn't a pill pusher and he'd explain why he wouldn't give a prescription if it wasn't needed but he told me patients would want something even if all they had was a bad cold.
As far as musicians and touring it seems they can't stop even when it's killing them because it's all they know. Glenn Frey and Prince for example both took medicine so they could continue playing and it helped to kill them both and I'm sure there are many other examples. I guess if you're an entertainer you don't want to stop no matter how rich you are, me I'd be happy counting the money but I have no musical talent.
