In the UK on average many hundreds of earthquakes are detected by the British Geological Survey each year, but almost all are far too faint to be felt by humans. And those that are felt generally cause very little damage.

The largest event in an earthquake swarm occurred in the centre of Manchester during October and November 2002. Followed by a 3.5 magnitude event 22 seconds later. Where I live, just a few miles east of Manchester, the quakes could clearly be felt, disloging guttering from nearby houses and cottages.

The strongest officially recorded earthquake in UK history was in the North Sea, in June 1931. It was scale 6.1 and could be felt along the Yorkshire and North Sea coast. However, technically it wasn't in the UK. The epicentre was 60miles east in an area called Dogger Bank. The quake was also felt in Belgium, France and Denmark.

A little trivial fact of my own experience...

There was a magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Dudley on 22nd September 2002 at 23:53 GMT (23rd September at 00:53 BST). The earthquake appears to have occurred on the Midland Microcraton along the Malvern Lineament

I was lying in bed when it happened and dropping off to sleep. I heard a low sound rumble that attracted my attention. I looked up, the facing wall with built-in wardrobe was fuzzy and its doors were vibrating.
Strange how the human mind works in fractions of a second. My first thought was a nuclear bomb! Then I quickly analysed that radiation travels faster than sound and, if it had been, I would already have been fried alive.
It lasted for no more than a few seconds but well before it had subsided I had realised what had happened.

It was the strangest experience, no words can describe it.
