Although torture was a commonly held modus operandi within the Middle Ages (as well as almost everywhere), the Church was not allowed to let any of their prisoners die under torture, and would often go to great lengths to avoid killing them outright. As heresy was a secular (where it was considered to be a form of treason) as well as a religious crime, those accused of heresy (which was punishable by death) was handed over to secular authorities.

It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms, and to replace the medieval inquisition which was under papal control. Various motives have been proposed for the monarchs' decision to found the Inquisition, such as increasing political authority, weakening opposition, suppressing conversos, and profiting from confiscation of the property of convicted heretics. The new body was under the direct control of the Spanish monarchy. It was not definitively abolished until 1833, during the reign of Isabella II.
The Inquisition, as an ecclesiastical tribunal, had jurisdiction only over baptised Christians. However, punishments were carried out by civil authorities.

There is a lot of frozen urine floating around in space. For years, most of it has just been dumped overboard. When it hits the cold vacuum of space it freezes into tiny pee crystals. With a new recycling system installed on the International Space Station that turns urine into drinking water, there should be a decrease in the quantity of pee ice debris in orbit.
