Sir Isaac Newton was born on January 4, 1643.

His 1687 publication of the Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (usually called the Principia) is considered to be among the most influential books in the history of science, laying the groundwork for most of classical mechanics. In this work, Newton described universal gravitation and the three laws of motion which dominated the scientific view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. Newton showed that the motions of objects on Earth and of celestial bodies are governed by the same set of natural laws by demonstrating the consistency between Kepler's laws of planetary motion and his theory of gravitation, thus removing the last doubts about heliocentrism and advancing the scientific revolution.

He also built the first practical reflecting telescope, developed a theory of colour based on the observation that a prism decomposes white light into the many colours that form the visible spectrum and formulated an empirical law of cooling and studied the speed of sound.

He died on March 31, 1727.

On 10 September 2009, following an Internet campaign, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the British government for their treatment of Alan Turing.

Who was Turing?

In his early twenties, Turing published a paper proposing a machine capable of performing any mathematical calculation. The Universal Turing Machine became the model for the development of the computer, and led to the creation of an entirely new set of mathematical practices.

Before he turned thirty, Turing cracked the Nazi's Enigma code: giving the Allies a powerful advantage in defending England and preparing the Normandy counteroffensive.

After the war, Turing drew up the first plans for the storage of computed information. He even dabbled in biology and chemistry, predicting solutions that scientists use to this day.

Alan Turing committed suicide at age 42, practically an infant by the standards of great mathematicians. He died not because he was depressed, but because he had been convicted of the "crime" of homosexuality and sentenced to chemical castration. Can you imagine what else he could have done if left to live his life?

The women debarked in Québec City, Trois-Rivières, and Montreal, and most had few difficulties finding a husband, as single men waited at the docks to begin courting them. If both parties were satisfied with each other, they would seek out a notary to draw up a marriage contract, and usually were married with a few weeks of that in a religious ceremony at the church. Many filles du roi were married within a month of their arrival in New France.
