The word siren originates from Sanskrit syali meaning to bind. From this we get the Greek seire a rope. Hence the name of the legendary women or femmes fatales who lured sailors to their deaths with their singing.
In turn the word was used for the name of a medieval musical instrument, producing an enchanted sound. And from that, any apparatus that produces a sound which attracts our attention, such as the wail of an emergency vehicle, is known as a siren.
