I will not make excuses for the killers. I’m not defending them in anyway. I just know there was a book (maybe two?) written with new evidence and it very well may have been after the gay community used this as a rallying cry and the GF and killers attempted to set the record straight? Anything's possible, but the fact is no one claimed Shepard was dealing drugs until years later. More to the point, there's a very good reason why his death resonated the way it did with the gay community.
