Martin Coburn -- "Trio" to anyone who wanted to keep their face as is -- joined his lieutenant, standing at the bank of monitors with a cell phone pressed to his ear. Hundreds of cameras -- some public, some hidden -- looked upon Trio's kingdom, inside and outside of The Tristan Tower. The two dozen monitors occupying the majority of the room's inside wall were cycling slowly through the various views, all except the largest of the devices, set in the middle of the bank.

This view on this one was of the Tristan's main entrance, just inside the second heavy security door but still outside the third one. A tough looking man with a Mac 10 slung under her shoulder and a cell phone pressed to his ear stood beside a comparatively tiny woman.

Trio operated the joy stick on the panel before him, zooming in on the woman. She was beautiful, with a dramatic, exotic face and tight, curvy body with features highlighted by the tiny, skin tight dress that barely covered her from just above her nipples to just below the meeting of her thighs.

Trio knew who she was; Amelia Hart, apartment 622. And he knew why she was asking to see him; it was the 6th, time for everyone on the 6th floor to pay their tribute. The fact that she was asking for Trio personally told him that she didn't have the two hundred bucks -- fifty a head for each of Amelia's family members under Trio's protection -- and she was looking to make other arrangements.

Trio asked the man beside him softly, "Where is she?"

The man whipped out a second cell phone and pressed a speed dial number. He lifted it to his ear, looking like some Wall Street trader, and a moment later he asked, "Where are you?"

The man pressed the phone to his chest, repeating the answer he'd received to Trio, "Shopping. Galleria."

A smirk widened Trio's lips. He took the first phone from the man beside him and looked into the monitor again, saying, "Bring her up. Green door."

The man in the monitor only nodded and pocketed his phone as he gestured the woman forward. Before they left the camera shot, Amelia looked up toward the lens and feigned a pleased smile.

Trio handed the first phone back to his Aide, then took the other and said, "Let me talk to her."

He headed across the vast suite, waiting for his queen to come on the line. Despite living in The City's most notorious public housing project, Trio and his first woman lived like royalty. Over the 12 years of his control over the Tristan and its neighborhood, Trio had converted the entire 27th floor, as well as the one above it and two below it, into a crime lord's palace, including doors that were spoken of by color codes -- which didn't match the doors' actual colors, of course -- to confuse any law enforcement officials who might be listening in as they considered breaching the fortress that was The Tristan.

When the woman's voice sounded in his ear, he said with an excited tone, "Hey baby girl, need a favor."

He began listing some things he needed, none of which could be found in any one location. Most women probably would have objected to such a scavenger hunt, but he knew that her love of shopping -- her love of spending his money -- would more than overwhelm any resistance to the request. He also knew that in between the locations he was listing, she would hit dozens of other stores carrying what she wanted.

When they finished, Trio climbed into the shower for a quick freshening up, then hopped out, dried, and donned a thick, soft robe. He was tying it about his waist as the door opened and a pair of men escorted Amelia into the Suite. Trio waved the men out of room, then sat on the bed's edge.

"What can I do for you, Amelia?" he asked unnecessarily. They both knew what he could do for her -- or rather, what she was going to do for him.

She crossed the suite, stood before him for a moment ... then knelt on the thick carpet before him, opened the robe, leaned in ... and paid tribute to her King.

Beyond the entrance of The Tristan, on any given day of the month, in parked cars, in dark bars, in private homes and public clubs across the neighborhood and City, women and even men were doing very much the same thing to people with money what Amelia was doing to Trio that night. Times were tough, and minimum wage jobs -- which constituted most of the jobs in this part of town -- simply weren't enough to support families anymore. Trio employed as many of The Tristan's residents as he could in his ventures into drugs, prostitution, extortion, and so much more; but there were only so many jobs to go around.

Across the street from The Tristan, standing in the shadows as he watched cars stopping momentarily to buy drugs or women, Carl Dean watched and absorbed all. He was interested in getting high or getting blown though. He was going to bring Trio's kingdom crashing to the ground.

All he had to do first ... was find a way to get in.
