Instead of using the money to diversify their economy the created a massive welfare state, free this, free that, and it all worked................until..................global oil prices dropped and they didn't have the money to pay for all the shit they were giving away. Along comes Hugo Chavez, a Communist sympathizing military officer who ran for office promising to "bring the 'good times' back." While he may have been successful as a politician he was a total economic incompetent who presided over the start of Venezuela's slide into failed narco state. He was replaced by a barely literate bus driver by the name of Nicolas Maduro who has managed to accelerate the slide.

Now, going forward it's going to have to be oil that pulls Venezuela out of the shit hole it's in today because that's the ONLY thing they have to offer the world short term to help restart their economy. We are not going to take their oil anymore than we took Iraq's oil. But they ARE going to have to use their oil to pay for the much needed and long overdue infrastructure rebuilding that will take place.
