Trump v china

Just consider:-

1. 25 million Chinese died in the civil war between 1927 and 1945.

2. Mao told the peasants to kill all the Landlords in 1952. They did so - officially 2 million, unofficially 4 to 5 million.

3. Then the Great leap forward was ordered 1958 to 61, a total disaster and 40 million died of starvation.

4. The Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976 which Deng later described as more damaging to the country its economy and people than any previous event. It must have been a doozy.

And yet there are people making comments in this thread that seem to think the Chinese are going to give into Trumps 'easy' Tariff war. The Chinese may be arrogant, crooked and lord knows what, but their history shows that they are incredibly resilient; they are not going to give into Donald Trumps demands in a hurry.

This is why I think raising tariffs on a broad front was dumb, firstly it drives the dollar value up proportionately, and secondly, much tougher but more narrowly targeted attacks would have hurt China more.

And it might be noted, the Chinese response has been far more focused - particularly on Trump's base.

No President on either side is going to be declaring "Mission Accomplished" anytime soon.

What they will give into it is the specter of Trump ultimately denying them access to the US banking and credit system. China will come to the table, one way or the other, unless of course the weak kneed media and the Democrats talk the country into capitulating to the Chinese.

This is only half the story. The Chinese are tough and will be so in negotiations but it's also necessary to consider American weaknesses (from a Chinese point of view). The Chinese perceive America to be a weak and corrupt society led by a President who personally is a coward and has a record of folding in negotiations.

I am not arguing that those are wholly or even partially true, but that is the point the Chinese start from.

Tactically, the Chinese think that Trump has to be in a position to declare a 'victory' a la NAFTA within 6 months or his election prospects will dim sharply.

Right Guide's assertion that the US would deny China access to the banking system is absurd. US Business interests would pillory Trump as a huge collapse in stocks and confidence would be triggered. Trump could do a lot of precision targeting but that's a nuclear option which would hurt everyone.

I have been in China for two of the last 4 weeks and the Beijingers are pretty confident - less so the southern business people.

It's not gunna be easy, especially as both Trump and Xi are have equally large and vastly over sensitive egos.

I'm sorry...

I don't care how "tough" the Chinese are.
They've been invaded, conquered, and subjugated.
They are only human.

Their "leadership" is more afraid of the people than they are of Trump.
They will cave, sooner, rather than later.

Their grip on power is based upon the will of the sleeping tiger.
They risk waking it up with a trade war...

Exactly, and that's the danger that Hong Kong represents. The mainlanders have different grievances, but if Hong Kong is allowed to prevail the contagion may spread. And even though the government may prevail in the short term this is a fight I think the government will regret picking, especially over such a trivial matter.
