The joke was taken as intended, sometimes i just try to be a bit well strange.........

Well i'm always trying to be a bit strange, that's why I'm usually uncertain if people get my jokes.

Hi BJB, missed you again!!

Probably a language problem, the joke seems funny in spanish

Yeah, I thought it was, a lot of languages seem to have a problem with the English concept of gender!

Lord in English is a masculine thing/person and BJB is hardly likely to be mistaken for anything remotely close to being anything less that feminine is she?

That's why the "joke" doesn't work in English!!

I'll send my invoice for the English lesson by first class snail mail!! LOL

BJB, if/when you're around honey, the ol' Salami has been waiting expectantly for a contact but, nothing yet honey, I am really getting a little despondent now, please get in touch huh?

Actually thats quite true. Did you know that English is actually one of the most complicated languages in the world? Because of its natural adaptability the inclusion of words has caused a lot of trouble, but we also have a lot of clauses, sub-clauses and tenses that we as natural English speakers dont realise that we use.

Take gender for example, most people think its a given that you'll have an honerific that identifies gender. In fact in japanese the word 'san' at the end of the name indicates the equivelant of a 'Mr' but it is genderless. In fact from my (slightly limited) knowledge of the japanese language (I can speak it, well enough to get by but not fluently) there ARE no gender speciic words. Even the definite article is rarely used (there is no the, a, I, you, etc... it is quite normal to refer to yourself in the third person in japanese).

Basically its a language mistake but an understandable one.

Everyone feel sympathy for vuchuu!

You are right with your speech, but I wanted to point out that when I meant the joke was funny in spanish, I said that because is funny in spanish to call lord a girl (using lord as the masculine word it is).

I know how hard it is to master a language, and I'm pretty far from doing it with english, but IMHO the gender example is not that valid.

You are right with the japanese part, as few words have gender. But, considering only the languages I've studied so far, all latin (romance) languages have two genders (french, italian, spanish and so on), and even harder are languages as german and norwegian (swedish and danish as well) having three genders, masculine, femenine and neuter.

In fact one of the things we (spanish) think are easy about english is that whatever a thing is, is always "the thing".

In spanish you have, for example, "la casa" (the house), which is femenine, and "el coche" (the car), which is masculine. And of course there is no reasonable reason for the house being femenine and the the car masculine.

I wrote too much now, lol

Everyone is here for BJB, so do I, so come back soon baby please ;)

OK so, not a language problem then but, it seems a cultural one!
I cannot claim to speak for "the English" but, I think I have a well developed sense of humour as well as an enquiring mind (as I think this debate demonstrates) especially for one of such advanced years as myself but, I see no humour in calling a woman "lord" !! This therefore must be a Spanish specific joke?
I dunno and I'm not trying to draw an argument out of this but, since BJB is not here for whatever reason, to stimulate sufficient interest to keep this thread up where it belongs, near the top of the pile!!

Anyone lurking here, why not pop in and say hello?

 es for BJB to warm, her when she returns. :rose: x12
