UK Online Directory. v9.

Afternoon, originated in Middle English (circa 1300–1330) as a combination of "after" and "noon" to describe the period following midday. It replaced older terms like aftermete and was derived from the Latin-rooted concept of "noon" as the ninth hour of the day.

Noon (or nones pronounced nOnes) was nine hours after the first prayer of the day, at 3am, suggesting that monks had a biphasic sleep pattern.

Afternoon all.
