Stuff does happen in Jane Austen stories! Just over a more extended period of time. The pacing is really good in Pride and Prejudice though--the story's a classic! It's like a Cinderella story. Not-the-prettiest (but with inner beauty--'she has fine eyes'), smart-ass Girl-next-door meets cool, aloof, gorgeous billionaire. Don't get along at first, but then realise their attraction for each other and get married at sumptuous wedding and go off and live in his huge country mansion. Of course, there's more to it at that, but at its base, that's what Pride and Prejudice is. Women like that kind of stuff, it's really timeless. That's why Hana Yori Dango is so popular. Only replace one billionaire with two, and they're fighting over you. Pride and Prejudice even has the jealous, rich biatch who wants your guy, the double-wedding with beloved sister and bad guy who gets his comeuppance. Hollywood steals so much from Pride and Prejudice.

Tom Cruise is a genius though. Maybe not an artistic one, but undoubtedly a shrewd money-worker. I admire a guy who can look after his cash well. Personally, I'm a firm believer in investing and doing things with your money, rather than sitting on it. Tom Cruise is very clever, as is Spielberg. And Tom Cruise isn't that bad an actor at all. He has undoubtedly got screen presence, and he's got bucketloads of charisma.

I find I can admire well-written prose, but well-written prose does not a good story make and I have to admit I read a book for its story than its brilliant literary style. If it has good style, all the better, because it makes reading the book more enjoyable on another level, but if it only has good style, but a crappy story, then I won't enjoy it. Sometimes an overdone style and sumptuous vocabulary and immaculate grammar will actually smother the story. I mean, apparently, Georgette Heyer writes Pride and Prejudice-esque stories, but when you've got page-long paragraphs, and endless inane descriptions you forget about the story. You need to get the balance right. In Pride and Prejudice, I think Austen did, but Persuasion just made me bored (still got through it in the end) and Emma bores me a little (it's all right.... but not as good as P & P) and Sense and Sensibility.. I was a bit meh about the storyline.

I'm always shocked by all these stats about America. I'm actually religiously scientific (my favourite little oxymoron of the day--made it up myself) and America's reputation as being gung-ho Christian 'you will go to hell because you believe in evolution' thing really gets to me. I know all Americans aren't like that, but I read in a newspaper that a survey conducted by the New York Times showed that 55% of americans believe solely in creationism. No evolution at all. I find that quite shocking, being a gung-ho 'science is cool' type. I'm probably not right to be so science-fanatic but hey.. I just love science.

But hey, I also heard that 80% of statistics are made up. That's really ironic. It's hard to know what to believe. But I'm not religious at all, I'm just very scientific.

I have to admit, I have a grudge against the victorian novel. Don't get me wrong, there are good victorian novels out there but the majority do suck an amazing amount of ass. Especially the Brontes and Austin. Its just the whole genre thats wrtitten about, it has absolutely no interest to me and its written in such an infuriating manner. I remember the first time I tried to read Pride and Prejudice. I actually had to stop reading halfway down the first page because I hated it so much. I even had to hold back an angry yell. Needless to say, that module was not my best. But although that style pissed me off to an extreme, the abstract writings of James Joyce I had no problems with at all.

You have obviously been basing your decision of tom cruise on something other than his films. I'm not saying he's a bad actor, I think when he does act he is very good but most of the time he doesn't think he has to bother and he is the most wooden character in any film (except maybe the film adaptation of Spawn, god did that guy suck!) except the aforementioned pair.

Most american schools now don't even mention evolution in its lesson plans. There was a whole court battle over it and now if a school doesn't want to mention it then they dont. I don't claim to be all knowing, personally I believe in evolution but I wouldn't dream of stopping people from learning about creationism. Its just paranoid ignorance and the distruction of knowledge, and that is a crime that pisses me off most of all about america.

Like i said, dickens is good as a historian, his social commentary is very accurate to the time and he paints a very graphic picture, but he still can't write. At least not in a way that actually makes me WANT to read the bloody books. There's also this whole 'dickens was amazing, you can't criticise dickens' atmosphere in the world. They're depressing, dull and irritating. He can't even create rounded characters, everyone is a characature. Its like having carboard cutouts or tom cruise in a film.

I'm mostly better but I'm losing my voice now. Sorry that you got my cold, especially seeing as we could have done more than hug if you were going to get it anyway :p :D

*chuckles* You should try my treatment for colds.....three days drugged up with every cold remedy you can get your hands on and lots of hot toddies :D

Tried it. Its pretty good because you usually forget that you've had the cold for that long because you're so out of it lol. Got to love hot toddies though, cos I'm an insomniac i sometimes have one to knock me out at bedtime. They don't always work though!

For some reason I have a real problem just switching off. I had an operation last year and had to be put under general anaesthetic. The guy said he'd never had so much trouble putting someone out.

Frankly, I think that's absolutely ridiculous. America has an awful reputation as being a country full of idiots. These kinds of laws really don't help. Creationism and evolution should be taught. But honestly, scientists are as certain about evolution as they are about continental drift. Most people can see and believe in continental drift, but I suppose it's too threatening to easily see and believe in evolution. Evolution is recognised as a fact, actually, but natural selection is a theory, which makes a whole lot of sense, given our knowledge of genes and the way we pass on our genes. What do they teach in American schools then? I mean, if people don't know where America is on a map.. they can't be studying Geography, can they? I mean, it's pretty fundamental..looking at a globe. I can't remember where I heard it, but apparently they think Russia is where America is, because it's the biggest country. I expect Americans know some history (about their own country, but I guess not very much about other countries). I think it's bad enough that people don't learn about the ancient China and middle-eastern civilisations. I was absolutely horrified by Robert Kilroy-Silk's attack on the middle-east. What has the Middle-East given to us? Just because a country is no longer a superpower doesn't mean it isn't worthy of respect. People forget that when we write this: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 we are using something that arabs gave us (I'm probably using wrong terminology, but hey, I'm no expert!). The problem is, the Western world believes they invented most things, but quite often credit isn't given where it's due. Like, with Pascal's Triangle, somebody came up with it before Pascal (in China, actually), but Pascal will be the one who's known for it in the west, so people in the west will think that they thought of it first. I think education should definitely encourage learning about other cultures more. It is too important to miss out on. Apparently, in America, they show very little foreign news too. And they drink tons of Diet Coke (which contains aspartame!!! Tip for today: DON'T DRINK DIET COKE! Or anything that claims to have no sugar, but is still sweet. It's very, very bad for you).

By the way, I'm ill (AGAIN!). I got your cold too, Plas. And a sore, croaky throat. Doctor wouldn't prescribe me anything, because it's viral. Damn viruses!!!!! I hate viruses!!!!!! Bacteria are much nicer--they help you (sometimes--but especially in recombinant DNA technology), and they're easier to control. Viruses are just annoying. VERY annoying. We can only be vaccinated against viruses, and vaccines aren't always the safest things.

Apparently, some people believe Illuminati are controlling the world through vaccination....!
