My wifely Wife and I are just beginning to make plans for our next trip to E/W/S (that's a railroad, isn't it?), probably in Spring of 2006. Anyone have any suggestions for what we should put on the itinerary? I prefer places we can get to by train, but if we need to hire a car I've got an AA mapbook and a knack for driving on the left.

It all depends on where youv'e been before, cos we might suggest some places you had already done. i know yo have mentioned before where you went while over here but my memory is too short to remember that far back.

We've been most of the obvious tourist places around London (from Kew in the southwest to William Morris gallery in the northeast), plus Canterbury, Cambridge, Stonehenge, Avebury, Bath, Wells, Salisbury, half a dozen white horses, Aberystwyth, Leicester (sort of -- took the steam railway there from Nottingham, then rode back on the next train), York (much too briefly, must go again), and Glasgow (note to self: hire English-to-English translator next time). Most of these are worth seeing again, but there's so much else to see in addition. Oh, and we spent one night in an overpriced hotel in Sheffield when bad weather shut the railways down and we couldn't get to London from York; all I remember about it was a university building that looked like four stainless steel teakettles bunched together -- not that that's a bad thing.

Haven't seen fens, or the lake district, or Oxford, or Scotland outside Glasgow, or the seashore except at Aberystwyth.

We like history (and pre-history) and museums and old churches and theater and good food and meeting people (trains are good for that). And whether it's due to our education or reading too much Austen/Dickens/Lewis/Sayers or something in our DNA that remembers where we came from a century or four ago, we just like walking through the cities and towns and countryside of England and Wales.

So you probably can't suggest anything we wouldn't like, and if it's something we wouldn't know about otherwise, so much the better.

The castle's been turned into its own museum with wax works etc... there's a musuem of lincolnshire life off on burton road and there's lincoln cathedral where Edward the 6th (aka the "hammer of the scots") used as a base of operations for his war against (surprise surpise) the scots. Plus its where I got my degree and there are some lovely stone windows. There's also usually a copy of the Magna Carta kept in the library there.

well the fact taht I know a lot about where I live is probably a good deal better than most tour guides. lol, but I just happen to pay attention and had a dad who is an intellectual and took me to those sorts of places as a child.

I totally second that stuff about something in DNA. Obviously, mine is a bit more obvious (after all, I was born in China) but I just feel like I belong in China so much. It's in my flesh, in my blood. It's just such a strong feeling. When I see Chinese writing, or hear Chinese or see Chinese land, I feel a really strong attachment and I feel wistful. I really am missing it. I haven't been back in years. Hopefully I'll go back this winter. I just adore the landscape and the culture. I read everything I can about China (at the moment, I'm reading a book about its economics). I just find it fascinating.

Man, I'm just so busy all the time. I don't spend much time online in general at the moment. Ah, I'll pop over soon. Got a birthday party to attend tomorrow! Will be fun. I've never met her boyfriend properly before (well, we went to the fair together once but we never chatted--she reported that he thought I was crazy but that was it) and we'll have a nice talk and get to know each other better tomorrow.

Oh yeah, and the random crushing on dude is continuing. Although I dislike his current taste in girlfriends.

I kind of have that. I'm being torn between my love of England and my love of Japan. I dont know why but I have a deep connection to the island. *sigh* Oh to be one of them....

Oh and marsi, I'l be out of town for a few days as I take out a few of my 'friends' in the mafia. But after that I'll be happy to eliminate any competition for whoever you're currently crushing on!
