No, it's the Norse term for the world we live in, between Valhalla above and the serpent below -- Mitgaard means Middle Earth.

The serpent is a long snake type thing that devours the stars, it then curls up to go to sleep and a world forms around it, 'til it gets hungry again. Not too certain it's norse mythology tho'.

Well in norse mythology the world was created when Ymir was killed by Odin and his family, his blood drowned the majority oif the frost giants and formed rivers and his body was turned into the earth. As far as swallowing the stars go, the end of the world according to Norse Mythology is when Loki releases Fenrir the wolf and fenrir swallows the sun allowing the frost giants to re-awaken (its complicated, they're mountains when they're sleeping and they're easily as powerful as the gods, kind of like the greek titans)

Not sure where the myth comes from either. From the sound of it, it could be from one of the south american religions. That's just from the snake reference of course. It could also be a dragon in an oriental religion (not Shinto obviously)
