On the subject of vampirism and the whole goth mentality I have one question to ask...

What's so bad about being a vampire, anyways?! I mean, seriously. How come in so many movies we always have the brooding euro-trash wannabe bloodsucker always stalking around the place with a look of generic disdain? I mean, fuck man! What have you got to be down about? Let's see...

1) Superhuman strength

2) The power of flight

3) Near-invunerability

I mean, man, if I ever had any of those things I can't ever see myself being all upset over the whole deal. Yeah, vampires have it pretty sweet sometimes, I just wish they would acknowledge that. :D

I will assume your talking about that hottie from Underworld, I know her first name but can't spell the last so... The reason she has that brooding look and focused disposition is that she has been living a lie for 500 years. If you saw Underworld 2 then you see that look has all but disappered and now is she is truely as close to her former self as she could be.

A vampires strength lies in how old the vampire that turns them is. Or if they were to feed on an older vampire then some of that strength is those given to them through the blood.

Not all the movies show Vampires that fly though that is part of the general myth. The Blade movies and Underworld are good example of non flying vamps, where as Van Heisling and Bram Stoker's Dracula go the other way.

The vamps being immune to stuff again varies according to the movie your watching but most agree that sunlight and holy objects, water and wafers, would do you in.

If a movie, play, or book was written by a vampire I am sure it would be different trouble is we can hardly grasp what 100 years of life would be like so how do you write about someone that has lived for 300 or more years well?? The next question is what does someone like that do with their time, they cant let themselves be exposed as something other then human so that limits what they could do right?? Not sure how old you are Mac but when I was a kid that is when atari hit its stride, but look at us now PS3 and Xbox 360 so what will it be like in another 25 years??

Some of this art work looks like it has a HR Giger influence.

All very beautiful.

And underworld, well, i can't say i enjoyed the movie. Usually a movie like that has a 100% certainty that i will enjoy it but for some reason i just couldn't get into underworld, even though the story concept was fantastic.

I think what ruined it for me was the fact i thought the lead role was not convincing in her character enough. He looks were fantastic but her attitude seemed all wrong to me.

vamp vs lycan

Hmmm - I could be a super hot vamp and fuck a lycan OR wait I don't think there would be another choice for me. :)

But then Marcus would have to kill you for mixing the bloodlines.

Never watched the sequel to Underworld (doesn't look all that exciting to me), but the first one wasn't all that bad. I'd take John Carpenter's Vampires over most of the modern vamp films anyday (Blade included). But anyways, if you look at the goth-vamp culture as a whole, you'll easily note the generic "broody" vamps that make up a large segment of the demographic. Of course, like you said, the myth is constantly changing with each new movie, tv show, book or fashion trend. Actually, it's funny that you mentioned how a vampire couldn't just go out and expose him or herself for what they are. One thing I did like about the fist blade movie was how the villian was all for just cutting loose and wanting to show the rest of us him and his vamp buddies were actually living amongst us.

On the subject however, if you want to see a good werewolf film, check out Dog Soldiers. It is highly recommended! When all is said and done, though, I prefer zombies in my horror/action films.
