"What the hell is that racket?" I asked. Apparently a rhetorical question, as I received no reply. Shrugging, I grabbed a lab coat (Thankfully not the one Shadow had "tailored" for me this morning) and ran down to the Kitchen, figuring that was the only place a fire alarm could possibly be coming from.
When I got there, I saw Shadow running her hands under cold water, and there was a faint, burnt-garlic-smelling, blue haze in the kitchen. The alarm's screaming couldn't possibly be good for her headache, I thought, then I checked her hands.
"Mild First-Degree burns. Probably stings a little. Get some aloe on that quickly, and you shouldn't even swell much in the burn area; the skin should stay flexible, although you'll have slight discoloration for months as a little reminder to use potholders next time."
