It seemed to be the straight medical establishment that didn't want to consider the possibility that diseases don't give a fuck about orientation.

I remember this thing being called, mysteriously "GRID" and barely reported at all in the mainstream media. I remember being reassured by my parents "don't worry, you could never catch this disease" in the 80's.

Heteros reaped the reward for their own stupid lack of concern, the disease jumped vectors because no one cared if a few gay men died and didn't think they needed to alter behavior or give a shit, a lot had your head in the sand blindness, actually. I blame the homophobic beaurocrats who thought the poor and the queer were disposable for the rampant spread.

The biggest single individual carriers today are probably truckers in west africa, who often have sex with hundreds of women on their routes, I believe this story was covered extensively in the Times magazine a couple of years ago. They are, to my knowledge, not gay.

No, it isn't. Not in the slightest. As has already been discussed in this thread, French-Canadian flight attendant Gaetan Dugas is the most likely candidate for the Patient Zero role. He is blamed for introducing HIV to the United States from Europe. (Whether or not that is true will never been known; scientists are still debating the issue, as I posted about earlier in this thread.)

Can you provide evidence to back this up? While there is a disease known as Simian AIDS, and there is a virus known as SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus), you are making some pretty bold statements here without telling us where you got the information.

Ok, lets be honest here. AIDS was well documented and understood by the time Freddy Mercury died. Not completely understood, but the basics of how it spread, and how to take care of it had been established well before it became public knowledge that he was ill. We didn't know because he didn't want the public to know because he wanted to believe he was strong. I do not know of any gay men who tried to keep the disease hush hush. There was a time before clinical evidence had been found where many people thought it was just an exceptionally morose form of gay bashing to refer to the gay plauge as it was known then, but when there was actual clinical information the gay community took it very very seriously, and I mean as soon as there was clinical data. Do some real research into the history of HIV and you might be surprised at what you find.
