hey all,
I seem to be having a bit of a problem with my girlfriend. We've been together for about 4 years, and we started having sex about a year ago. Since we've started, she's had 2 Urinary tract infections. The first one was over the summer when we had sex about 5 times over the period of one day. The second one was recent, and really took a lot out of her.

Since then, she seems to be nervous about having sex. She doesn't want to for fear of dealing with another UTI.

To be honest, we've had sex a LOT more than those 2 times she got the infectionn, but she always talks about it and makes it seem like she always gets them. How can i help her get back to enjoying sex without her feeling nervous.

also what are some good ways to prevent a UTI?

I really care about her and dont want her to suffer.

thanks a lot!

Cranberry capsules daily will help reduce the risk of UTI's. If you can't find them, then cranberry juice will do the trick, but it only works if you do it on a regular basis.

Get her to go for a check up too, just in case it's something else. Good luck!

Also make sure she urinates after intercourse, to flush out anything that may have gotten into her urethra.

Sex 5 times a day....reminds me that UTIs used to be a honeymooner's 'disease'. :)

Sorry no additional advice....what you've got so far is good.

Are you circumsised? Supposedly, guys with foreskins can give their lovers more frequent UTI infections, 'cause it's harder to keep the bacteria from growing under "Mr. Foreskin".

If you're "uncut", you might wanna wash up beforehand, just to make sure.

As a frequent sufferer of UTI's myself, i recommend:

1. As already stated here, urination immediately following any form of sexual play involving the pussy (sorry, i hate the word vagina) can help as a prevenattive measure. Any form of bacteria introduced to the urethra can be an issue, and can happen very easily, even with simple fingering or even as the recipient of oral.

2. Wash hands prior to playing (both partners, or all three , or four etc).

3. Wash all toys properly. Sylicones, plastics, & glass etc (any non-porous, nonmetal) can be disinfected with a 50/50% mixture of household bleach and H2O. Anything metal is best cleansed with rubbing alcohol (NO, that bottle of Jack Daniels will not do the job in this case). With either meathod of cleaning, toys should be soaked for 10 minutes, left to dry, and then washed with dish soap, then rinse.. rinse... rinse.... with clean warm H2O.
--- It's not a wise thing to use the same toys anally that you use vaginally, regardless. Keep a seperate collection, one for use ONLY in the pussy, another designated for use ONLY in the ass.

4. Drinking lots of fluids regularly will help, and cranberry juice (as already stated in another reply) has proven to be effective as a preventative measure. ---i don't know why, or how, and have too much gift wrapping left to do to research it. Want to know why? Try here ---> www.google.com

5. Always wipe from front to back to avoid introducing bacteria to the urethra opening after urination or shitting ( i hate the term 'bowel movement' -- we all have them, let's hope they are not TOO much of a moving experience for most --uhh unless ya into scat.. ick.)

UTI's suck big time. The medication sucks almost as much (pissing a neon shade of yellow while feeling like your bladder has been flushed with acid may actually be an enjoyable form of enjoyment for some masochists and i for one would rather not have to experience it again myself.) So ... i hope these tips help others.

Sinn0cent1 pretty much nailed it.

Your girlfriend should go to the bathroom prior to and following sex to flush away any seman that might get close to the urethra. Also, her bathroom habits play just a big a role and is the most common reason for UTIs. Lastly, she should be drinking plenty of fluids. Cranberry juice is ideal, but so is just plain ol' water!

I've only 2 UTIs in my entire life (I'm in my 40s), but they are something a woman never forgets! I still live in dread of getting another one, but don't let that stay foremost in my mind.

One more thing my doctor's nurse shared with me. I was feeling the beginning of a third UTI (yes, you can certainly identify the feeling from the very beginning!) and called my doctor immediately to get an appointment. The nurse told me I couldn't get in for another day or so and I knew I would be in agony by that time. She suggested to just start drinking fluids like crazy - either water or cranberry juice. Many people can actually avoid a UTI this way if they catch it early enough. I did as the nurse suggested (spent most of that day in the restroom!), but it worked! By the time of my appointment, there was absolutely no pain and the infection had virtually cleared up on its own. This doesn't work for everyone, but it can be worth a try.

I remember my friend in college felt a UTI coming on, so she came to school with a gallon jug of cranberry juice, lugged it to all her classes, and chugged from it all day long. I'll never forget it!:) :)

Cranberry juice works because it makes urine more acidic, thus killing the bacteria when you go to the bathroom. Just make sure it's not one of the low-juice content blends. The worst thing you can do is not drink lots of extra fluids and let it go for more than a few days.

Do some research together with your girlfriend and urge her to talk to her doctor about preventing an infection in the future. I bet once she realizes she has a fair amount of control over them, the fear will go away.

Ack - the dreaded burning...

I was born with a medical problem that, in a roundabout way, has caused me to have a UTI every month or two since I was a kid. Since I got sick of taking antibiotics constantly, and I was horribly stubborn even then, I started to learn other ways of dealing with the cursed infections. Cranberry stuff (juice, capsules, hard candies) is definitely your best bet in my experience. You can find the capsules in the vitamin section in most grocery stores. For juice my personal favorite is Oceanspray. Besides cranberry juice they make great cranberry/other juice blends that are wonderful if you're not a fan of pure cranberry juice. They also make great cranberry hard candies, or at least they used to. I'm not sure where to find them if they still make them. It's also a good idea to keep your immune system as strong as possible with general stuff - enough sleep, lots of vitamin c, lots of water, etc. And for when all the preventative stuff doesn't work, I've heard that dissolving baking soda in water and drinking it reduces the burning sensation but I've never tried it myself. Good luck.

Not to be pedantic, but my sis the OB/Gyn doc says that cranberry juice has a specific chemical that causes a lot of bacteria to not be able to cling to the bladder wall as well, and that's why it's effective. Otherwise if it was just the acidity, ordinary vitamin C tabs would work.

She also says it's not a cure-all, so if you don't get better fairly quick, best see a doc!

Thanks for the info...I was more refering to it as a preventative measure, when the bacteria's in the urethra.

You're right about getting to the doctor...I've only had one kidney infection, but that was one too many in a lifetime!
